My name is Beatrice, I’m 26 years old, and I live alone with my two beloved cats Cocos and Sally. Our lives recently turned upside down when a fire destroyed our home.

The fire started when one of my cats, who was home alone at the time, accidentally turned on the stove. Unfortunately there was no child lock.

Thankfully, the firefighters arrived in time, were able to put out the fire quickly, and saved my cat's life. He made it out alive - though shaken. I was outside with my other cat at the time, so she was unharmed. I’m beyond grateful both of them are safe.

But while the fire didn’t destroy the entire apartment, the smoke did. Almost everything inside was damaged beyond repair, furniture, clothes, electronics, and all of the cats’ belongings are gone. I tried to save what I could, but the smoke had gotten into everything.

Now I’m left without a home, without most of my belongings, and without the stability I’ve been fighting so hard to hold onto. And because the fire was caused by my cat, I am being held strictly responsible for the damages and must pay for them out of pocket.

I don’t have a financial safety net. I recently had to leave my job after being on extended sick leave due to depression, anxiety, and burnout. I’ve also been carrying debt from veterinary bills for my dog, who became severely ill and died two years ago. My last day at work was just last week, and then the fire happened.

This has broken me. The cats have been my saving grace throughout everything, through grief, through illness, through loneliness. I can't bear the thought of losing them too, simply because I can't afford to care for them in the aftermath of this disaster.

I’m asking for help - something I never thought I’d have to do and struggle immensely with too.

Paying off the damages from the fire

Veterinary care and supplies for my cats

Replacing essential furniture and belongings

Getting our lives back on track

It’s just me, trying to survive and trying to make sure my cats and I can stay together, safe.
