Help Me Realize My Dream of Becoming a Dentist in Canada

Hello, my name is Zack, and I’m reaching out to ask for your support as I prepare to begin my studies at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Dentistry this fall. This opportunity represents the culmination of a long and challenging journey—and the beginning of a dream I’ve held close to my heart for years.

I came to Canada as a Syrian refugee, forced to leave behind my home, my community, and my studies. Back in Syria, I was in my final year of dental school when war interrupted everything. Starting over wasn’t easy. I worked hard to learn English, integrate into Canadian society, and pursue higher education. I earned an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology with Distinction from Wilfrid Laurier University and was awarded the McLulich Silver Medal for achieving the highest academic standing in my department.

After facing rejection from Canadian dental schools in the past two years, I didn’t let that stop me. I turned to the U.S., hoping another door might open—and it did. I applied to seven U.S. dental schools known to welcome Canadian students, and to my great joy, I was accepted to all of them. It felt like a huge breakthrough—a recognition of all the hard work I had put in.

Unfortunately, I soon discovered that Canadian banks require a co-signer for international student loans—something I wasn’t able to secure. It was heartbreaking to have come so far, only to be held back by financial barriers. It was a painful experience that added another layer to my journey.

Still, I kept going. I improved my communication skills, volunteered with organizations supporting people with disabilities, and continued gaining experience in dental clinics. I poured everything into this year’s application cycle—and this time, I was accepted to Dalhousie.

This is not just an academic achievement. It’s a powerful moment of hope, resilience, and redemption.

I lost 60 Kg during this process. :-)

But now, I face a major financial hurdle. As someone with limited resources and no access to co-signers or private loans, I am unable to cover the full cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses. Tuition alone is $220,000 ( the total tuition for four years) , and my only current source of support is my provincial student assistance program which can cover up to 15K-17K max per year.

That’s why I’m reaching out to you. If you believe in second chances, resilience, and the power of education to transform lives, please consider donating. Every contribution—big or small—brings me closer to my dream of becoming a dentist who gives back to the community with compassion, humility, and care.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
