My three grandbabies, daughter, and son-in-law live on 20 acres in the hot Arizona desert, about 45 minutes from Wilcox. They’re surrounded by sand and sun, with no power and no car after theirs broke down. My son-in-law moved back from Fresno, hoping for a job, but it fell through, leaving my daughter to manage the land and kids alone for almost a year. Getting water is a daily struggle—they rely on 5-gallon jugs and sometimes have to call the police just to get to the store. Solar hasn’t worked out yet, and the heat is getting worse.

I’ve spent everything I have trying to fix my own car so I can deliver the items I’ve gathered for them: big tents to create living spaces, AC units to help them cool off, a generator for power, a shower tent, and even a car for my daughter. But every time I think I’m ready, another problem pops up. My granddaughter has health issues, including asthma and a brain condition, and needs propane for cooking. Their mobile home is almost on its last leg, and the heat inside is unbearable. My daughter’s hair, once thick and beautiful, is thinning because she can’t wash it enough and the wind is making it worse.
