Hi, my name is Lisa. Over the past year, my life changed in an instant when I suffered a violent attack that left me with a traumatic brain injury, a skull fracture, and a brain bleed. I woke up in the hospital hours later, not knowing what had happened. I am incredibly grateful to be alive, but surviving was just the beginning of a long and difficult journey.
In the months following my injury, I endured a challenging recovery process. Unfortunately, I fell behind on rent during this time and lost my apartment. For a period, my dog Pearl and I were forced to live in a tent, trying to navigate each night amidst fear and pain, and fighting to stay hopeful.
I did manage to get out of the tents and into a shelter, and that seemed safe… But as soon as I entered the shelter, I sustained a severe injury to my dominant hand while trying to protect myself. The shelter environment was not adequate for me to heal, and I faced significant difficulties recovering from this injury there. The instability and unsafe conditions made it nearly impossible to focus on healing from my brain injury and the ongoing medical challenges I continue to face.
Currently, I need a second surgery to address complications from the first operation, and I have not been able to work at all due to this. I am eager to return to my passion and rebuild my life, but I need your help.
Despite everything, I have not stopped trying. I work with social workers. I apply for housing programs. I search daily for rentals. I fill out applications and follow up constantly. I am doing everything in my power to secure my own place — but I cannot close this financial gap alone.
I have a job waiting for me at an incredible tattoo shop. I am ready and determined to rebuild my life. I want to work. I want to heal. I want stability. I just need a safe place for Pearl and me so I can finally recover properly and move forward.
I am asking for help to secure stable housing. Any contribution, no matter the size, or even sharing my story, makes a real difference.
This past year has tested me in ways I never imagined. But I am still here. I am still fighting. And with a little support, I truly believe I can rebuild.
Thank you for reading, for caring, and for any kindness you can offer.
With all my gratitude,
Lisa
