Help Me Pursue Law School in the United States!

Donation protected
An open letter to you,

My name is Marco Del Grosso, an international student from Italy yearning to complete my studies in the United States.

I would sincerely appreciate your help to pursue law school in the United States. I have been accepted to the University of Miami School of Law, and I am waiting to hear back from other law schools, such as Florida International University, Osgoode Hall, and the University of Oregon.

As much as I would love to pursue my studies, I am confronted with an incredible financial barrier I hope to overcome thanks to your help.

Knowing that the average law school tuition gravitates around $50,000 per year, I would appreciate it if you could please help me cover the tuition cost for three years of education. Your kind contribution will help me financially. I will provide for my books ($900 per semester) and rent ($600-800 per month) working part-time on campus.

Being an international student seeking a degree in the US entails that I can only work part-time on university campus grounds due to my F-1 VISA restrictions. Taking out loans would not be as easy as it is for American students since I do not qualify for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The only institutions that offer loans for international students charge 7-13% interest per year. As a result, working for 20 hours on campus would not be enough to pay for my books, rent, and monthly loan payments.

I have always dreamt of studying in America. The only opportunity I could afford was offered by American Field Service: living a full year in the United States with an American host family during my senior year of high school. Ten thousand high school students competed to be selected for the few hundred spots available. I was just seventeen when I was confronted with a competitive process that could have meant partial success or failure. The admission process to the program turned into my favor. During my year in the United States, I went from knowing a bit of English to graduate among the top students in my class with straight A's. After returning to Italy, I started pursuing legal studies.

However, in my heart, I have always desired to go back to the United States. That is why I decided to attend the University of Macerata. It offered a competitive scholarship to study at Florida Gulf Coast University for one semester. I could not help but participate in the competitive process.

Upon completing a round of two interviews in front of a panel of professors from different faculties, I went ahead to attend a Leadership seminar offered by a visiting Florida Gulf Coast University professor. As a result, I was selected for the semester exchange.

My second American experience started in August 2017. I aspired to make the most out of that semester abroad. That is why I achieved academic excellence in class and on campus by devoting my time to involvement and volunteering within the Southwest Florida community.

This instinctive commitment to share my time at the Florida Gulf Coast University community gifted me with an unforeseeable achievement. After one semester, FGCU offered me a scholarship to seek my legal studies degree within their institution.

After two and a half years, I graduated Magna cum Laude with the Honors College highest tier of recognition: Distinction. Additionally, I served the University campus and Southwest Florida community for a total amount of 405 hours of volunteering involvement:

-           assisting lawyers providing relief to victims of abuse at the Shelter for Abused Women and Children

-           mentoring first-generation American middle school students from the less privileged San Carlos local community partaking in a recreational soccer team

-           advocating on behalf of the Children with Diabetes association to further the fundraising purpose

During my academic career, striving to achieve equitable means to express diversity was as irrevocable as completing my education. That is why I also pursued leadership activities:

-           Creating, pitching, and managing an innovative event celebrating acceptance and diversity on campus, namely, the FGCU International Friends Café by joining efforts with FGCU President’s Office and FGCU International Services (after graduating, this event became a legacy at Florida Gulf Coast University as it was added to the Diversity & Inclusion curriculum)

-           furthering international culture partnering with international students on campus by being the Chief Cultural Officer of the International Business club

-           analyzing data concerning international students and faculty population by being selected as the only student in the International Lab Incoming Mobility sub-committee

I was also awarded the Diversity & Inclusion certificate at FGCU and nominated Rotaractor of the month during September 2018 upon receiving the Service Before Self Award.

My American college experience was a pivotal moment in my intellectual growth and appreciation of diversity that enlightened me and inspired me to pursue a legal education in a rapid-changing, intercultural society.

Specifically, I yearn to promote idea-driven change by facilitating permeability between law practice and new ways to implement problem-solving strategies within underrepresented communities. For example, I consistently find myself thinking about how to engage with minority group challenges to legal practices that conflict with their cultural or ethnic expression. I subsequently reflect on how to resolve such contention by approaching law transversely, utilizing tailored means to innovate legal practice.

I believe that the legal arena could benefit from my diverse perspective and international heritage. I also believe that innovating law practice requires a plurality of voices to embrace differences by way of guaranteeing inclusiveness of every member of the community, especially if underprivileged and underrepresented.

I believe that your kind help will offer me the perfect tools to achieve myself by sharing into the American social contract, empowering the powerless, giving voice to the voiceless, pursuing social justice benefiting the wider American family.

The funds would be needed starting August 2021. Every contribution, big or small, would be sincerely appreciated!

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Marco
