For the past three years, I’ve been living in a rented property where the previous tenant never stopped the utility bills from being invoiced in his name. I never received a single invoice. I was never told how much energy was being used, how much was owed, or even which company supplied the house.

I raised this with the landlord early on. He told me that if something was wrong, the electricity would eventually be cut. I waited. It never happened. I assumed—wrongly, and with serious consequences—that I would be contacted or warned. I never was. No letters. No bills. No information at all.

If I had known from the beginning what the real costs were, I would have acted immediately. I would have insulated the house, reduced heating, limited usage, and adapted my life—especially through three cold winters. I would never have allowed this level of waste. But you cannot manage what you are never shown.

After three years, the energy company finally contacted me with a bill of over £12,000. I was briefly told there might be a discount available. However, I was in a state of shock and stress and was redirected to support services to try to understand what was happening. While I was trying to get help and make sense of the situation, time passed — and the discount expired. I am now facing the full amount, with no reduction.

I am one person, a tenant, caught in a bureaucratic failure that grew silently without my awareness — and I am now being asked to carry its full weight.

This situation has pushed me into constant stress and anxiety. It has affected my sleep, my focus, and my ability to function normally. I am actively trying to resolve this through the proper channels, but bureaucracy moves slowly, and the pressure is immediate.
