My name is Sydney Halsey. As a rising senior at Salem College, I have always built my life around being active and deeply involved. Between working two jobs at the college IT help desk and an escape room, to maintaining my place on the Dean’s List while pursuing a degree in Business Administration, I am used to staying busy. I was set to spend this summer interning at Disney, but my plans have come to a sudden halt. I am currently facing a serious health crisis. Complications from endometriosis and the long-term impact of my medication caused significantly reduced bone density. This resulted in a closed fracture of the left tibial plateau and a closed fracture of the left distal fibula. I underwent open reduction surgery on April 18th to repair these fractures. The procedure involved internal fixation with a six-hole stainless steel plate and several specialized screws to stabilize my leg. My recovery is going to be a long process, likely 4 to 6 months, and I have to be strictly non-weight bearing for that entire time.

Due to the fact that I cannot work this summer, I am facing a significant financial burden. I need help to cover the immediate costs of my surgery and upcoming medical bills, as well as the basic equipment required to safely navigate my own home. I am working to set up an accessible space so I can maintain some independence while I heal, but I cannot afford to manage all of these expenses on my own.
