On September 7, 2026, around 3:00 p.m., I was sitting in my living room and watched my ceiling collapse and bang onto the floor. It was so shocking and scary, I started shaking all over.
It was drywall and paper, and so much rat droppings and black mold. It was disgusting and smelled absolutely horrible. I called the landlord, and I dragged the stuff with some men from my road outside into plastic black bags. Then I swept and washed the floor. There had been puddles on my floor during the rains from the hurricanes, but of course I never expected something like this to happen. I had told my landlord that my roof was leaking in several spots, and he said, "My roof is leaking also." He never once came up to look at it or try to fix it. When he became my landlord, he walked through the house, and I showed him where there were leaks.
The last hurricane, Lala, was the final blow that saturated the ceiling. Enclosed are some pictures; I hope they help you see how devastating the ceiling collapsing was. A good friend came over that afternoon and put the tarp up on the roof so that the rain wouldn't come right through the roof.
Another really dear friend, who was a contractor, came over to estimate the damage. He wrote that it was criminal that I was living there, and I needed to move ASAP. He said structurally the house is really weak and falling apart, and there are other places where the ceiling could come down. I am moving out as quickly as I can, wearing a mask as I work, because the house is really weak and falling apart. I've lived there about 14 years, so there's lots of momentos and things I have to go through and decide if I can throw them away.
