I received news that has changed my life forever: I tested positive for the Huntington’s gene, with a CAG repeat of 43.

Huntington’s is a rare, genetic neurological disease that slowly takes away a person’s physical, mental, and emotional abilities — often during the prime of their life. There’s no cure. No treatment to stop its progression. I’m 39 years old.

I got tested because my dad, who’s been experiencing unexplained neurological symptoms since he was 60, refused to. He said, “What’s the point?” I thought knowing would give me peace of mind. I believed it would come back negative — there’s no known history in our family. But I was wrong.

Before the results came in, I joked to my husband, “If it’s positive, I’ll retire and we’ll just travel the world together.” The reality is, I can’t afford to retire. My husband also lives with a rare, untreatable disease and is on disability. I’m our main source of income, and I work remotely.

But I can ask for help.

I’m raising money for a reliable Class B RV — not for luxury, but for freedom. So we can hit the road together while I still have time and don’t have symptoms. So I can continue working remotely while experiencing the beauty of the world with the man I’ve loved for 17 years and our sweet dog, Isadora Pearl.

I want to chase sunsets. I want to wake up surrounded by nature. I want to learn from the richness of different cultures. I want to feel alive — before Huntington’s takes that from me.
