Help me keep Kenyan girls in school!
Hi Friends,
You may remember Marion who we at The Biscuit Factory put through teacher's college in Kisumu, Kenya. Here is her graduation pic:
Many of you generously supported a GoFundMe to buy her a laptop (impossible to acquire cheaply in Kenya) a few years ago.
Marion is now a full-fledged teacher and has started a non-profit effort, to help her female students, called Duo-Educators. Duo-Educators is Marion (assessing needs, doing home visits and distributing items), our wonderful fiscal coordinator Jared (a scientist and community educator for a clean water/HIV ngo) and me, the money person. You might get where I'm going with this - hoping I can raise a nest egg to help keep these efforts going, especially as COVID has been an additional financial challenge.
Here's the great thing - helping these girls is a crazy BARGAIN. The things that make the difference between staying in school and dropping out: school and period supplies, shoes, uniforms, school fees (mostly for orphans) and (lately) vaccinations (for HIV positive girls), masks, soap and hand sanitizer.
Here's the awful thing - IF they drop out their choices get bleak quickly. Early marriage, transactional relationships with older men and sex work. (And HIV, HIV, HIV.)
So I hope you will consider joining us here at Duo-Educators!
Through photos, videos and several lifetimes of receipts for maxi pads, I can assure you that the money is going to the right place. Oh, and Marion makes lovely reports on her laptop:)
Thank you for reading and considering!
Molly
