Never thought I would ask for help on a public platform. Well, here goes...
I am a 64 year old woman. I live in Reno, Nevada. I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2019 and have gone through surgeries to remove the Cancer, a hysterectomy and removal of organs not needed to keep the Cancer from migrating. It came back and I had to go through a second round of Chemo. I've gone through two years of poking and prodding, tests and worry. Though I am doing well on the Cancer front, I was told at the end of May that, for now at least, I am Cancer free. I have however developed Chemo induced Neuropathy and have constant pain in my feet.
Now here comes the pandemic. My 66 year old husband of 47 years can't find work in his field. His industry is still suffering the effects of the shutdowns. Reno and surrounding areas are a hot bed of high prices and low inventory thanks to poor planning and has new homes for people working for Tesla types, but housing is almost impossible to find at a reasonable price for anyone else. Rents have jumped from $1,500 for a small home to over $2,000 for even a halfway decent, clean home to rent.
Here's why I am asking for help. We have been happy in our current home for almost five years and had wonderful landlords during that time. However with the chance to make a big profit over what they paid for the home they have decided to sell. They told us when we paid our rent last month that we should have no worry, that they would never sell and that we were wonderful renters (it was hard but, during the pandemic, when many landlords were not getting full rent, we managed to keep up, incurring late fees on other bills to keep them whole). They told us not to be concerned, that they were appreciative of the good care we have taken of their property and that they were not going to ask us to move. We relaxed took some deep breaths and felt very lucky. Jump forward three weeks... we are now told we have to be out of the house at the end of August, thanks to advice they got from their accountant.
So far, no help from Reno Housing Authority as they already have a long list. We are trying to find things to sell, but I don't think there is time for it to make a difference. I am still dealing with the after effects of Chemo, can't walk much because it causes me so much pain, so I am not much help when it comes to packing and lifting , But ya get on with it, it's tough but we've done tough before.
They say bad things come in threes. The third disaster falls our way last week when the transmission goes out on the car, an $8,157 quote for repair, and we can't even find a used transmission we can afford. We are just overwhelmed.
Now, with only a couple of weeks left to get out, I don't know what else to do but ask for help from good people like you. My husband is a songwriter and he will write and deliver a song of gratitude for you if you can contribute to reaching our goal. May good fortune bless you and keep you. We thank you.
