Hello! My name is Kyravv Lewis (Rin is just a pseudonym), and I'm a student at SJSU hoping to do a homestay program in Kyoto. I absolutely love Japan, and have wanted to go there since I was very little. I've also been a huge fan of Japanese media since I was young, to the point of having the entire first season of Pokemon on VHS as a child-- and that interest is sticking with me in my career. I hope to be able to go into script writing and video game localization one day. To that end, I'm pursuing a Japanese minor, and this homestay program will meet some of my fulfillments for that minor.
Here is a cost breakdown for the program:
750$ to pay for SJSU Special Session Tuition (3 units)
200$ for administration fees
4,365$ for airfare, hotels, tours, rail pass, and other accommodations.
It's also recommended that we have at least 600$ for spending money and to pay for lunches, but that much I'm hoping to save up on my own via art commissions. If you're interested in that, look here: http://www.apocolypsetoreador.deviantart.com
All the money donated to this gofundme will be used to pay for the homestay trip fees. Any additional funds used for spending money on the trip, or to pay for any preparations necessary to travel to Japan, such as vaccinations.
When I need funding by:
EDIT: Base funding for the program is complete! All donations currently go to securing spending money.
Why this matters so much to me:
As mentioned before, I absolutely LOVE Japan, and have since I was young. I love learning about Japanese culture, language, food and history, and what better way to do that then to actually go to the country and study it there?
This is a wonderful and rare opportunity to go somewhere I've never gone before, learn about a culture I've always wanted to learn, and visit places I've always wanted to visit.
Honestly, even the 25 days of this program doesn't feel like enough to see everything I want to see! I've got so many places I've always wanted to see, from Harajuku and Shibuya to Akihabara, and much more! Just being able to go to Japan would make me happier than words can say.
More info about the homestay:
The homestay will be 25 days, from June 15th to July 9th.
There will be lectures on Washoku (Japanese cuisine), Haiku, and Japanese history. There will also be workshops on Washoku, Temari (thread ball making), Zazen (temple meditation), and Tea Ceremonies.
The trip will take us to several temples in Nara, Kyoto, and Uji. We'll also have field trips to the Tale of Genji Museum, Hiroshima, and Sendai. We'll spend two days in Tokyo.
The homestay counts as a class- Japanese 160, or Special Topics in Japanese Studies, which can substitute for the Japanese 102 class I need for my minor.
My thanks:
I can't express how grateful I'll be if my donation goal is met! It'll be an experience that I'll certainly never forget!
Of course, I'm not intending those to just be empty words. I plan to regularly update my donors via social media and through updates on this page. I'm hoping to make a regular vlog while in Japan, and post photos and short videos of my experiences on Snapchat and Instagram.
Questions:
Q: Why do you need help raising funds for the homestay? Do you have a job?
A: EDIT: Yes, I have two! One working for the city of Campbell as a lifeguard and weight room attendant, and one working at the Campbell Summer Winds Nursery location. I work 20-30 hours a week between the two jobs. I also take commissions through my DeviantArt, and am slowly working towards an Etsy store. Regardless, every little bit helps me out a great deal!
Q: I can't afford to donate at the moment!
A: That's okay! I understand that money is tight for everyone right now. Even 1-5$ helps, of course, so if you at least have that much, believe me, I'll be greatly appreciative! If you're not able to do that for whatever reason, I'd be very happy if you were to share this gofundme page and spread the word. A signal boost is always appreciated!
