Dear friends and supporters,
My name is Walter, a 32-year-old Venezuelan living in Amsterdam. On Monday, March 3rd, 2025, I received the heartbreaking news that my younger brother, Luis Alfredo, passed away at 27 in our hometown of El Quebradón, Mérida State, Venezuela.
Luis Alfredo had Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS), a rare neurological disorder that severely affected his ability to communicate and led to frequent seizures and breathing difficulties. Despite these challenges, he brought immense joy to our family. Our mother dedicated herself to his full-time care, which made it impossible for her to work.
I left Venezuela 12 years ago as a refugee after narrowly escaping being hit by a bullet during a political protest on my way to work. I left not only because of the violence and economic and political problems of the dictatorship, but also because I did not feel safe as a queer non-binary person. Recently, I lost my job, making it financially challenging to return to Venezuela to say goodbye to my brother and to support my family with funeral expenses.
Fundraising Goal: €5,000 and the funds will be used as follows: €2,000 for round-trip flights and transportation, €1,500 for funeral services and transporting his body from El Quebradón to Maracaibo, and €1,500 for accomodation, food, and other necessities during my stay.
Your support, whether by donating or sharing this campaign, will help me honor Luis Alfredo's memory and reunite with my family during this difficult time. Every contribution, no matter how small, is deeply appreciated. If you can't donate I would really appreciate it if you could share this with your circles.
Thank you very much!
Walter
