Help me give my daughter Antonella a better future

Hello, my name is Maira Alexa. I am 27 years old and an international student from Bolivia who came to the United States to pursue my dream of studying and building a better future. My life took an unexpected turn a few months ago when I found out I was pregnant. My daughter’s father, Marcelo, was in Bolivia, and while the distance made it hard for us to be together, we decided to face this beautiful challenge with love and hope.

As a first-time mom, I was scared but overjoyed when I heard my daughter’s heartbeat during ultrasounds and felt her first movements. We decided to name her Antonella and dreamed of giving her a life full of love and opportunities. Marcelo traveled from Bolivia to be by my side on the most important day of our lives.

On Wednesday, January 2, 2025, I went to my final doctor’s appointment. That day, my doctor told me they needed to induce labor because my baby had stopped growing properly. My placenta was no longer nourishing her, and although I was 38 weeks pregnant, her growth measured only 34 weeks. I was terrified but also excited and ready to meet my baby.

When Antonella was born, what should have been the happiest moment of my life quickly became one of the hardest. The doctor told me, “I’m sorry.” My baby was born with a cleft lip and palate, something that hadn’t been detected during the ultrasounds. My heart broke—I felt a mix of pain, fear, and confusion. But when they placed her in my arms, all I could do was hold her, kiss her, and promise her that I would do everything possible to ensure she would be okay.

Moments later, the doctors transferred her to a specialized hospital in Utah because she was too small and couldn’t feed properly due to her condition. It was devastating. My world collapsed. I had waited so long to hold her in my arms, only for her to be taken away that same day. But I knew I had to be strong for her.

Antonella will need at least six surgeries throughout her life to address her condition, as well as therapy and other treatments. As an international student, my financial resources are very limited, and I was not prepared to face the medical and emotional challenges this situation has brought. However, I am determined to give my daughter everything she needs to thrive and live a happy, fulfilling life.

Today, I am reaching out to you—kind-hearted people—for help. The funds raised will go toward covering Antonella’s medical expenses, including her surgeries, therapies, and treatments.

Mi vida cambió por completo cuando, hace unos meses, descubrí que estaba embarazada. Desde el primer momento, soñé con darle a mi hija, Antonella, una vida llena de oportunidades. Su llegada estaba llena de ilusión y preparativos. Sin embargo, nuestra historia dio un giro inesperado que nunca imaginé.

El 2 de enero de 2025, en mi última consulta médica, me informaron que debían inducir el parto de inmediato. Antonella tenía 38 semanas de gestación, pero solo 34 semanas ecográficas, ya que mi placenta había dejado de alimentarla. Estaba aterrada, pero también emocionada por finalmente conocer a mi pequeña.

Cuando Antonella nació, lo que debería haber sido el momento más feliz de mi vida se tornó en uno de los más difíciles. El doctor me dijo que mi hija había nacido con labio leporino y paladar hendido, una condición que no se detectó durante las ecografías. Mi corazón se llenó de miedo y confusión, pero al mismo tiempo de amor. La abracé y prometí hacer todo lo que estuviera en mis manos para que estuviera bien.

Por su tamaño y condición, Antonella fue trasladada a un hospital especializado en Utah, ya que no podía alimentarse correctamente. Ese día me sentí devastada, pero supe que debía ser fuerte por ella.

Antonella necesitará al menos seis cirugías a lo largo de su vida, además de terapias y tratamientos para ayudarla a crecer y desarrollarse plenamente. Como estudiante internacional, mis recursos son limitados, pero mi determinación por darle un futuro mejor no tiene límites.
