Help me get my Lymphoma treatment

Hi everyone! My name is Maria Paola Hernandez and I'm 26 years old. I'm a chemical engineer from Maracaibo, Venezuela and moved to Kansas last year. I am a student at Park University working on a Master's degree.

I recently started feeling poorly and was having pain. I was prescribed some anti-inflammatory medicine and ended up with jaundice and liver problems. During the workup for my pain, it turned out I have a lymphoma that has spread through most of my body. It’s so bad in my neck and chest that many of my blood vessels have collapsed and cannot be seen on imaging. The day the doctor broke the news to my sister and me was the worst day of my life. 

It turns out I have Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The excellent doctors at the University of Kansas Health System diagnosed me and told me that I have a good prognosis as long as I immediately go through the full course of treatment with chemo which should take about 6 months if all goes well. 

It has been a really scary time, but I took solace knowing that I had student health insurance and started chemotherapy recently. Unfortunately, I just learned a couple days ago that the insurance will only cover a tiny amount of the cost. I have been told I need to come up with at least $145,000, otherwise I cannot continue the life saving chemotherapy I need. 

Returning to Venezuela is not an option. Given the political and social unrest as well as dire financial situation, I would not receive any treatment at all there. 

I have a great team of doctors in my corner and they have connected me with resources in the community to help explore options, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there is anything that can be done in terms of my insurance coverage or alternatives.  

I am looking for help raising the funds I need to receive chemotherapy. All funds will be used for my medical care. I have to raise at least 25% of my goal before I will be allowed to continue chemotherapy and my next treatment is supposed to be on July 13th 2020. Additional payments will be due regularly thereafter, and if I cannot come up with the money, they will stop my treatment. 

I am blessed to be in such a great place where there is a cure for my condition and am placing my faith in the generosity of others. I can only promise you that if you help me through this, my family and I will be eternally grateful and will spend the rest of our lives trying to pay this kindness forward.

¡Hola a todos! Mi nombre es Maria Paola Hernández y tengo 26 años. Soy una ingeniero químico de Maracaibo, Venezuela y emigre a Kansas hace un año para estudiar una maestría.

Recientemente me empecé a sentir mal y tener mucho dolor. Me prescribieron medicinas antiinflamatorias y terminé teniendo problemas en el hígado. Luego de realizarme varios exámenes los médicos del University of Kansas Health System me diagnosticaron con Hodgkin's Linfoma y me explicaron que tengo un buen pronostico siempre y cuando pueda realizar mi tratamiento de quimioterapias que durara 6 meses aproximadamente.

Han sido días muy difíciles pero tenía la confianza de que mi seguro de estudiante cubriría los gastos médicos. Desafortunadamente, hace unos días me enteré de que solo se harían responsables por una mínima parte. El hospital me ha dicho que tengo que reunir 145,000 dólares o de lo contrario no podre continuar con la quimioterapia que necesito.

Regresar a Venezuela no es una opción. Debido a las consecuencias de la crisis económica, social y sanitaria que vivimos, no hay ningún tipo de insumos médicos ni las condiciones para poder ser tratada.

Tengo un excelente equipo de médicos ayudándome y poniéndome en contacto con recursos de la comunidad para explorar diferentes opciones, desafortunadamente no hay nada que podamos hacer en términos de seguro u otras ayudas alternativas.

Necesito su ayuda para poder recolectar los fondos que necesito para mi tratamiento. Tengo que recolectar al menos 25% de mi meta antes de ser aceptada para recibir mi próxima quimio que debe ser en Julio 13 del 2020. Pagos adicionales deberán ser hechos regularmente después de la inicial y si no cuento con el dinero, no continuaran el tratamiento.

Soy muy afortunada de estar en un hospital que cuenta con cura para mi condición y deposito mi fe en la generosidad de ustedes. Solo les puedo prometer que su ayuda en este momento harán que mi familia y yo estemos eternamente agradecidos y pasaremos el resto de nuestras vidas tratando de devolver su generosidad para con otros.
