It's been 9 months since I started fighting to stay alive...

My name is Rebeca Oviedo, I am 38 years old, I am the mother of a wonderful 8-year-old girl and 6 rescued dogs, wife to Erick, the love of my life, and a pastry chef. I am from Costa Rica, where I currently live.

In the last few months my life (and my family’s) has taken a 180 turn. I suffer from “chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension”. I can't walk 100 meters without running out of air, I cannot do the things I love. I cannot be the mother, wife and person that I wish to be. The surgery I need is not an option in Costa Rica, so I wish to tell you my story in the hope that you can help me in any way. We will be forever grateful.

How our nightmare began

On May 3, 2022, I was hospitalized for a "massive" pulmonary embolism, which happens when a blood clot reaches the lungs and can be fatal. After 4 days in bed and anticoagulant injections, I was discharged and I thought that would be the end of that chapter.

When I got home I had to remain on oxygen 24/7. The doctor estimated I would only need it for a month, but unfortunately that was not the case. We decided to go to a pulmonologist, who was quite confused as to why I had not been given critical tests when I was hospitalized. The next step was to do all these tests, including an echocardiogram that finally revealed my diagnosis: "chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension."

This is an extremely rare disease, caused by my pulmonary embolism, because the clots did not completely dissolve and became scar tissue, causing a blockage in the artery that connects the heart and lungs. This forces my heart to pump harder, and by doing this, it makes the right side of my heart enlarge. If this is not fixed, it eventually leads to a heart attack and death.

Since my diagnosis, together with my pulmonologist, we have studied the option of one procedure that could solve the issue. We visited experts in peripheral vascular, cardiology, hematology and performed this less invasive procedures that could help dissolve the clot and resolve the problem. Unfortunately the procedure did not work as expected; I still have the blockage in the artery and the hypertension remains.

Now we are facing a situation where there is only one option left to save my life, see my daughter grow and continue making memories with my family, but it involves a highly specialized and expensive surgery that is not performed in any place.

The name of the surgery is “pulmonary endarterectomy”, an open heart procedure where all the scar tissue in the arteries of the lungs are removed. It is one of the rarest and most risky surgeries that exists, and is performed at UCSD in San Diego, California.

Our last resort and why we need you support

The cost of the surgery and tests is $131,000, a high price due to the rarity of the surgery and of my condition. Adding airfare, lodging, transportation, food, gasoline, and post-operative care, the total budget is around $140,000. That is why today we ask for your help, since we cannot cover it alone, but we also do not want to give up on the possibility of continuing to live, seeing my daughter and exploring the world. Han pasado 9 meses desde que empecé a luchar por mantenerme con vida…

Mi nombre es Rebeca Oviedo, tengo 38 años, soy mamá de una niña maravillosa de 8 años y de 6 perros rescatados, esposa del amor de mi vida y repostera. Soy de Costa Rica, donde actualmente vivo.

En los últimos meses mi vida (y la de mi familia) ha dado un giro de 180. Sufro de “hipertensión pulmonar tromboembólica crónica”. No puedo caminar 100 metros sin quedarme sin aire o hacer las cosas que amo. No puedo ser la madre, esposa y persona que quiero ser. La cirugía que necesito no es una opción en Costa Rica, por lo que me atrevo a contarles mi historia con la esperanza de que puedan brindarme su apoyo. Estaré eternamente agradecida de cualquier ayuda que nos puedan brindar.

El comienzo de nuestra pesadilla

El 3 de Mayo del 2022 fui hospitalizada por un diagnóstico de embolia pulmonar bilateral “masiva”, lo que sucede cuando un coágulo de sangre llega a los pulmones y que puede resultar mortal. Tras 4 días de cama e inyecciones de anticoagulantes me dieron de alta y pensé que sería el final de todo.

Al llegar a mi casa debía estar con oxígeno 24/7. Los doctores estimaban que solo lo necesitaría un mes, pero desgraciadamente no fue el caso. Decidimos recurrir a un neumólogo, quien estaba bastante confundido de por qué no me habían realizado exámenes de suma importancia cuando estuve internada. El siguiente paso fue hacer todos estos exámenes, entre ellos un ecocardiograma que reveló mi diagnóstico: “hipertensión pulmonar tromboembólica crónica”.

Esta es una enfermedad sumamente rara, causada por la embolia pulmonar, debido a que los coágulos no se disolvieron por completo y pasaron a ser tejido cicatrizado, lo que genera un bloqueo en la arteria que conecta el corazón y los pulmones. Esto obliga a mi corazón a bombear con más fuerza, y al hacer esto, hace que el lado derecho del corazón se agrande. Si esto no se arregla, eventualmente lleva a un ataque al corazón y la muerte.

Desde mi diagnóstico, hemos visitado a expertos, en vascular periférico, cardiología, hematología junto a mi neumólogo . Junto a mi neumólogo estudiamos la opción de un procedimiento que no es tan invasivo para tratar de deshacer el cuagulo y resolver el problema. Desafortunadamente el procedimiento no funcionó como se esperaba; sigo teniendo el bloqueo en la arteria y la hipertensión se mantiene.

Ahora estamos frente a una situación en donde solo queda una opción para lograr salvar mi vida, ver a mi hija crecer y seguir creando recuerdos con mi familia, pero implica una cirugía sumamente especializada y costosa que no se realiza en cualquier lugar.

El nombre de la cirugía es “endarterectomía pulmonar”, un procedimiento a corazón abierto donde remueven todo el tejido cicatrizado en las arterias de los pulmones. Es una de las cirugías más raras y con mayores riesgos que existe, y se realiza en la UCSD, en San Diego, California.

Nuestro último recurso y por qué necesitamos tu apoyo

El costo de la cirugía y los exámenes es de $131,000, un precio alto debido a la rareza de la cirugía y de mi enfermedad. Sumando pasajes de avión, hospedaje, transporte, comida, gasolina y cuidado post operatorio, el presupuesto total ronda los $140,000. Es por eso que hoy pedimos ayuda, ya que nosotros solos no podemos cubrirlo, pero tampoco queremos renunciar a la posibilidad de seguir viviendo, viendo a mi hija y explorando el mundo.
