For the past several months, I’ve been without my vehicle, and it’s made life incredibly challenging. My car is currently with Car Works, an organization that helps low-income individuals get help on their vehicles. This afternoon, I learned that my vehicle needs an ABS sensor, a serpentine belt, front brakes, an oil change, and wipers. The total cost for all the needed parts and work is more than I can manage right now. With Christmas time here and rent coming up, it’s been impossible to set aside enough to fix the car—rent and bills have to come first, and there just hasn’t been much left for us to work with.

Not having my car has meant spending too much money on Ubers and Lyfts just to get to work, and I’ve been struggling to ask for rides to pick up my son for our visits. Making it to work on time has been difficult, and I miss being able to help others in my community, like taking people to church on Sundays. It’s been hard to keep up with rent, bills, and food, and the holidays and winter have only added to the financial strain.
