Help me Get a Prosthetic Hand to Regain My Autonomy

Hello, my name is Jimena Vergara-Sanz, and I am reaching out for your support in an important and life-changing moment. This is a relaunch of my campaign to seek your assistance. I was born without my right hand, and for my entire life, I’ve depended solely on my left hand and arm to carry out daily activities. After years of overuse, I’m now experiencing severe pain and fatigue in my only hand and arm, which has made my life incredibly challenging.

I am an Industrial Design professor at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. I love my work as an artist and designer, but my ability to do what I’m passionate about has been greatly affected. Drawing fluently, using power tools, and even carrying objects have all become difficult, impacting my work and everyday life.

Why I Need Your Help: The only way to regain my independence and manage the physical pain I am experiencing is to get a prosthetic hand and engage in physical therapy, which I am actively participating in. However, the cost of the prosthetic is beyond my financial means. The total cost of the prosthetic hand is $35,755, and my insurance will not cover any of it. I need to raise this amount to cover the expenses. Boone, North Carolina, where I live, has a housing crisis that has driven living costs extremely high, and my savings, which I brought with me from Colombia, have devalued significantly due to the exchange rate. This, combined with my current situation, makes affording this essential prosthetic hand even more difficult.

Where Your Donation Will Go: All of the money raised will go directly to Skyland Prosthetics & Orthotics Inc., who will develop and install a Point Design prosthetic hand for me. Your support will allow me to regain the ability to do everyday tasks, relieve the strain on my only hand, and return to living a more independent and productive life.

A few months ago, I embarked on a journey of courage by asking for a hand, literally. I decided to put aside my embarrassment and accept the help I need. This is something I rarely do and am now learning to do. Daring to do something new brought several surprises. The response from my community was unexpectedly quick, generous, and loving. We not only reached $10,800, but many hearts, including mine, were filled with love, joy, and light. I am incredibly honored and grateful to have reached this amount already. However, the response from the healthcare system was disheartening. After pre-approving my request, they denied it, arguing that it was a "comfort item." It seems that having lived 41 years without a hand makes a prosthesis be seen as something related to comfort and not functionality, despite the fact that my only hand and left arm hurt a lot and challenge my life on many levels.

As a result of this obstacle with the healthcare system's response, I decided to start a research and product development process, learning how to make my own prosthesis. I have a research plan and have greatly enjoyed printing hand versions on 3D printers with my research assistant. However, using these hand models has caused pain in the stump, as much development is still needed to meet all necessary specifications. It has been spectacular to experiment with this, and I am confident that having my new supersonic hand will allow me to help many other people. It has been a process of ups and downs, like life itself, full of reflections on giving and receiving.

A few days ago, I saw a story by an Aboriginal Australian in the movie "Human," where he explained that in their language and society there are no words for "please" or "thank you," as there is an authentic belief that everything is for everyone. Thus, they share, and no one lacks anything. Reflecting on this made me feel a deep desire not to lack this hand that I so want and need. It also made me understand why it is so hard for me to ask, as it makes me feel embarrassed or undeserving. I hope that this becomes an opportunity for all to experience that everyone can have what they need, and that we can do this all together.

This story inspired me to launch this campaign from a new place, inviting those who want and can to be part of me using a magical hand that will help me enormously. With this act, together we can create a reality where no one lacks anything. That is why today I muster up the courage again to relaunch this campaign and reach the goal of $35,000. Tengo un plan de investigación y he gozado muchísimo imprimiendo versiones de manos en impresoras 3D con mi asistente de investigación, pero la realidad es que usar estos modelos de manos me ha generado dolor en el muñón, pues aún falta mucho desarrollo para hacerlo con todas las especificaciones necesarias. Ha sido espectacular experimentar con esto, y estoy segura de que, teniendo mi nueva mano supersónica, podré ayudar a muchas otras personas. Ha sido un proceso de altibajos, como la vida misma, lleno de reflexiones sobre dar y recibir. Hace unos días, vi un relato de un aborigen australiano en la película "Human" donde explicaba que en su idioma y sociedad no existen las palabras "por favor" ni "gracias", ya que hay una creencia auténtica de que todo es de todos y para todos. Así, comparten y a nadie le falta nada. Reflexionar sobre esto me hizo sentir un deseo profundo de no carecer de esta mano que tanto quiero y necesito. También me hizo entender por qué me cuesta tanto pedir, ya que me hace sentir avergonzada o no merecedora. Desearía que esto sea una oportunidad para que juntos experimentemos que todos podemos obtener lo que necesitamos, y que lo podamos hacer juntos. Este relato me inspiró a lanzar esta campaña desde un nuevo lugar, invitando a quienes quieran y puedan, a ser parte de que yo use una mano mágica que me ayudará enormemente. Con este acto, juntos podemos crear una realidad donde a nadie le falte nada. Por eso, hoy me armo de valor de nuevo para relanzar esta campaña y alcanzar la meta de $35,000.
