Hi! My name is Marielle Symonds, and I am 14 years old.
I live with laminopathy, a rare form of muscular dystrophy that causes my muscles to weaken over time. Because of this, I use a wheelchair full-time. My wheelchair helps me stay independent in many ways, but it also makes transportation impossible without the right kind of vehicle.
What I need is a new wheelchair-accessible vehicle, one that allows me to stay in my chair and travel safely. I currently have one, however, it is old and breaking down. Having an accessible van gives me so much more freedom. It means being able to leave the house without stress, participate in any activities or outings with my family without difficulty, and attend important medical appointments more easily.
Regardless of my health, I’m a regular teen girl with big dreams. I love singing and writing poetry. Having reliable, safe transportation would open up more opportunities for me to keep exploring these passions, whether that’s going to music events, joining clubs, or simply spending time with people who inspire me.
The cost of a new wheelchair-accessible vehicle is extremely high—about $100,000 once the van and the accessibility modifications (like a ramp and securement system) are included. This is far more than my family can afford on our own. I also live in New Brunswick, and there are no funding options available. That’s why I’m reaching out and asking for help.
Every donation, no matter the size, will bring me closer to having the independence and opportunities I dream of. Even just sharing my story helps more than you know.
With your kindness, I believe we can make this happen.
Thank you in advance for your kind generosity!
