Hello! My name is Winter and I'm in urgent need of a wheelchair. I live with several complex medical conditions, among them being a genetic connective tissue disorder that causes me great difficulties walking. I deal with constant joint pain and instability in nearly every part of my body, which causes immense fatigue, frequent sprains, muscle injuries, joint dislocations, and consequently, falls. I have been unable to work due to my illnesses for nearly 3 years now. In that time, my symptoms have progressed from being able to walk with forearm crutches most of the time to needing an electric wheelchair. I cannot even push a manual wheelchair now due to the fragility of my joints.

While there are so many things my body can no longer do– like running, exercising, climbing stairs, or dancing– what affects me the most is missing out on life and being unable to leave my home. A wheelchair would allow me to go places I haven't been in years. I have missed out on so, so many events and opportunities to connect with and spend time with the people in my life. I am 22 years old and I have spent all of my 20s so far being unable to do normal things that people my age do. A wheelchair would help make basic things like a trip to the grocery store much more attainable. I would no longer have to spend days being bedridden after just leaving my house for a few hours.

Unfortunately however, insurance does not cover the type of wheelchair I need– a folding power chair. This means that I will have to pay for everything out-of-pocket (with funds I don't have since I am completely unable to work). I truly hate asking for money, but I know that I deserve basic mobility and to not miss out on life as it happens around me.
