Update/Edit: Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,
I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to each one of you who contributed to and shared my GoFundMe link last year. Your generosity and the grace of God have made it possible for me to continue my education, and I am forever thankful.
I’m overjoyed to share that December 2024 will be my final year in school (UBC)—something that once felt like a distant dream. Over the past year, I have had to work multiple jobs to pay for my tuition, balancing the demands of work and study. Your contributions, of $4,169, were a significant part of this journey. They allowed me to start a payment plan with UBC and gave me the momentum to keep going even when times were tough.
Now, as I enter this final stretch, I am once again reaching out for your support. My tuition for this year is $17,838.52, and I’ve worked hard all summer to save $9,000, which I’ve paid today ( receipts to this post). This leaves me with just over $8,838.52 remaining, and I would deeply appreciate any additional support to help me cross this final hurdle.
I am so close to the finish line, and your continued support would mean the world to me. I want to give a special thank you to my mom, who has been my rock throughout this process. Her unwavering support has kept me going, and I am so grateful for her.
To everyone who has contributed and to those who may still choose to do so, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I couldn’t have made it this far without you. Your kindness and support have made all the difference, and I will forever be grateful.
Thank you so much, and God bless you all.
With love and sincerity,
Princess Amuta.
Dear Friends,
I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart and a plea for help.
Allow me to pour my heart out to you and share my story, filled with hope, resilience, and an unwavering desire to make a difference in the world. My name is Princess, and I am an international student pursuing my dreams in International Relations at the prestigious University of British Columbia in BC, Canada. The opportunity to study at this incredible institution has been nothing short of a miracle, but now I find myself at a crossroads, desperately in need of your support.
My eyes light up at the mention of International relations. I have always had the zest and zeal since I was in high school to pursue a degree in international relations and I yearned to complete my program as planned, but an insurmountable financial hurdle seems to crush my dream. A staggering $100,000 tuition fee is what I require to finish my degree. The weight of this financial burden has been crushing me, and it breaks my spirit to admit that I simply cannot afford it. I started school in September 2018 with the required 120 credits to complete my program. As of today, in my 4th year, I have only completed 72 credits with 48 credits to go. I have exhausted all my resources with a hefty $105,000.00 spent so far towards my tuition fees. Just yesterday, my mother tearfully informed me that there are no more funds available to support my education.
My Story
In 2017, I tragically lost my dad, the pillar of our family, who provided for our needs. Left with the daunting responsibility of raising four children single-handedly, my mother made a tremendous sacrifice to put all of us through school. She made the difficult decision to bring me to Canada to pursue the best of higher education, hoping that a bright future would overshadow the looming darkness of my father's passing. We were never wealthy, but we managed to live comfortably. At that time, two of my siblings were already in the university in Nigeria, and my mother had to pay our school fees. To stay within a limited budget, I couldn't register for enough classes every semester since I started school in 2018.
Our family business which was supporting us, took a huge downturn financially during the COVID-19 pandemic with the global economic crisis particularly in Nigeria making it nearly impossible for my family to continue supporting my education, with annual tuition fees in excess of $50,000 for the International Relations program. To keep my dreams alive, my mother had to sell my father's properties and company. Since then, I have tirelessly taken on both on-campus and off-campus jobs whenever possible, which helps me pay for my rent, food, school supplies, medical bills, phone bills, and utilities. The thought of not finishing my program because of the financial challenges my family is facing gives me anxiety. The weight on my shoulders is heavy, but my determination to stay in school remains unshakable.
In the midst of my despair, I embarked on a relentless quest for scholarships. I approached my school for assistance, only to find that resources for international undergraduate students were limited. I applied for numerous bursaries and awards, some of which resulted in rejections or no responses at all. With tuition fees constantly rising and the cost of living in British Columbia soaring, my commitment to academic excellence has remained steadfast but my dream seems to be in jeopardy. It is with a heavy yet hopeful heart that I now turn to you, appealing for your support in raising $100,000.
Time is of the essence, as my study permit is set to expire in November this year. Renewing my study permit requires proof of continuous full-time study, making it imperative that I secure the necessary funds to sustain my education.
Now, more than ever, I believe that the power of human compassion and empathy can turn my dreams into reality. I have exhausted all possible avenues, and it is with a humble heart that I ask for your support. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make an immeasurable impact in my life and pave the way for a brighter future. With your generosity and kindness, I hope to overcome this seemingly insurmountable challenge.
Thank you from the depths of my soul for considering my plea and for being a beacon of light in my darkest hour.
With gratitude,
Princess.
