I fled my country at a young age to pursue the opportunity to study, an opportunity sadly not afforded to girls in Afghanistan. Upon arrival in the UK, I was only 16 years old minor who sought asylum and was then classified as refugee and care-leaver. Since then, my passion for education and my dream of studying medicine have kept me going. I have dedicated myself to education despite many challenges, including learning English, studying ESOL, passing my GCSEs, completing my A levels, and now being a fourth year medical student at King's College London. This journey shows my diligence and determination.
My resilience, compassion, and motivation continue to drive me toward achieving my goals. However, financial difficulties have caused me great stress. Despite careful budgeting and working part-time, I will still struggle to cover essential expenses such as rent, bills, food, and travel for the next academic year. I receive no support from the government or family, and the student loan I will receive for the final two years of my degree is greatly reduced. Even with the added NHS bursary, it will not be enough to cover my living costs.
As a mature student, who also struggles with generalised anxiety disorder, this has caused me great amount of stress as I am finding it challenging to continue pursuing my dream of becoming a Doctor.
I study ‘Extended Medical degree program’, which is 6 years long compared to traditional medicine course. This program is aimed at students who come from lower social- economic backgrounds like me.
Please support me in my journey.
Thank you.
