Help Me Fight Primary Progressive MS & Rebuild My Life
Hi, my name is Chris Schendel, and this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do—ask for help.
I am 37 years old, and two years ago, I was officially diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS). Looking back, I believe I’ve been battling this disease since I was 30, but I pushed through as long as I could. Now, I can no longer fight this alone.
Before MS took over my life, I dedicated myself to helping others. I spent years mentoring and developing individuals in the workplace, holding director roles at fitness centers, meal preparation companies, and other businesses. I worked hard, paid my taxes, contributed to Social Security and Medicare, and did everything I could to build a secure future.
I quit drinking in November 2012. I have helped run meetings for struggling alcoholics, addicts and homeless individuals, as well as sponsored hundreds of men.
Ironically, just before my diagnosis in 2023, I was an independent business owner advising families and individuals on health insurance. But as my symptoms worsened, I struggled to meet the demands of my job. When I could no longer perform at my previous level, I was let go.
Living with MS
MS has made even the simplest tasks incredibly difficult. I have trouble seeing, walking, balancing, speaking, and even completing basic daily tasks. Driving is nearly impossible, though I do it when absolutely necessary—like getting food.
My treatment requires:
✅ Ocrevus infusions twice a year
✅ Biannual MRI scans
✅ Quarterly neurology appointments
To afford this, I must maintain private health insurance, which allows me to qualify for a state grant that covers my infusion costs. But medical debt is piling up—I owe nearly $25,000 in medical expenses and another $10,000–$15,000 from past business investments when I was still able to work.
On top of that, basic necessities are becoming harder to afford. I do my best to eat clean—lean meats, fresh vegetables, and fruits—but with rising grocery prices and inflation, maintaining a healthy diet feels impossible.
Why I’m Asking for Help
I never wanted to be in this position. I’ve always believed in working hard, being self-sufficient, and giving back to others. But MS has taken away my ability to work, and I’m struggling just to survive.
I know there are kind-hearted people out there who understand what I’m going through and who may be in a position to help. If you can, please consider donating. Every bit helps me afford food, medical care, and basic necessities—so I can focus on managing my condition and finding some sense of stability.
Thank you for reading my story and for any support you can give. Even if you can’t donate, sharing this with others would mean the world to me.
With gratitude,
Chris Schendel
