Hello. You might know me by a lot of names, depending on where it is you know me from - whether it's Gabby, Hypo, Froggy, Beelz, etc. Regardless of what you call me, I need help.

I am raising money to get myself out of a living situation that is no longer sustainable.

I am entrapped in the remains of a hoarder house in Florida, alongside my disabled mother. I have lived in this house my entire life, and known no other. We are on a fixed income through my mother's retirement-disability pension. Our water was shut off two weeks ago for an alleged leak we cannot afford to fix or even find, due to various compounding factors like the cost of living crisis, our property taxes shooting up 300% in the course of a single year, and my inability to find a job despite at least 100 applications and networking. We have even been rejected from a low income repair/rehab service that the county offers. Half the time, we cannot even afford food.

This is not a call to try and fix this house. At this point, this house is unfixable. It is toxic, both literally and emotionally.

This is instead a call to try and get enough money to get myself, and only myself, out of this house and out of Florida.

Let me explain.

It is because of my mother that I am stuck here, due to years of codependent abuse of various shades, and financial mismanagement.

I went from over $12k in cash saved up from various sources (mainly tax returns) to try and move myself out of Florida, to over $22k in credit card and other debts. Much of this was taken without my knowledge by my mother (under guise of "paying bills"), and what wasn't taken, I foolishly gave to her under the belief that it was needed to keep us afloat in the current cost of living crisis.

If the financial mismanagement was not enough, she is abusive. She suicide baited me into staying at home and becoming a caregiver to my dementia-afflicted grandmother (who was also a former abuser of the both of us), instead of letting me leave to go to school and pursue my Master's degree (which is a necessity in the job field I am pursuing). She has downplayed many things I endured in my childhood or claimed they "weren't that bad", especially things that were explicitly her fault. She has belittled my feelings, while simultaneously acting as though I am the one who has slighted her.

Upon having a recent emotional breakdown that had me on the border of being suicidal, triggered by the strain of our financial and living situation as well as recent political results, she stated, and I quote:

"I can't do anything about your severe depression. In fact, if I was as miserable as you clearly are, I would have taken my gun and blown my brains out by now. So suck it up, buttercup."

This is the last straw.

Over 30 years of this, and worse besides. It is obvious to me that this is not a living situation that I can stand any longer.

So I am imploring you for help, trying to raise enough money to leave home and leave her, once and for all.

And before people claim I am abandoning my mother - despite being disabled, she not only has multiple friends, but nearby family (less than an hour away) who are more than capable of providing the resources to support her. She is not so disabled that she cannot drive or make her own decisions. She is fully capable of finding and applying to resources for herself, and she is fully capable of managing her own finances to support herself (she makes just over $3,000 a month in pension). As we are seeing her family at Thanksgiving, I intend to speak to them about potentially taking her in.

Meanwhile, I have no one but her. All of my friends are out of state, and I have no real connection to either side of my family.
My goal is to try and get north to find not just more stable living, possibly nearer to my friends, but also to seek better employment opportunities.

The money I am asking for is going to go to several specific things, which I will break down accordingly:

  • $100 to replace my smartphone - I have a Samsung Galaxy S9 that is on its last legs, with the screen unable to turn on unless I "juice" it with a charger. As a smartphone is required to function in modern society, this is a top priority to fix. The phone is currently insured, and so this will cover the $80 insurance fee plus the $10-20 for shipping
  • $120 for my Proton suite - An odd expense to be sure, but I have the Proton suite so that I have encrypted email as well as a dependable VPN. If I lose access, then I lose not only the VPN I use for various work, but also my main email address. This is an expense I *cannot* let go unpaid, and it is only $120 for an entire year. This is the one "subscription" I let myself have.
  • $1,200 to pay off part of my credit card - I have no intentions of asking for the entire $20k+ debt, as that is an impossible hole to fill through charity alone. however, if there is a way I can avoid delinquency with the credit companies and salvage even a bit of my credit score, then paying off at least three months of my unpaid debt might just help.
  • $1,500 to pay off a quick cash bank loan - This is one of the loans that my mother made me take out to try and support us. As I am about to be declared delinquent to the credit companies due to being unable to pay my credit card debt (again, which ballooned because of her mismanagement), this will not only help my credit score after it has inevitably tanked due to her actions, but it will be dropping an anchor from around my neck that is keeping me tied down to this place.
  • $220 (approximately) for a bus ticket to get out of the state, as I cannot drive - as previously stated, I have multiple friends in the north I can potentially stay with until I find better opportunities, and barring that, places I have researched and considered as being a better place to live than my current situation. The list of options includes Philadelphia (PA), Richmond (VA), Champaign (IL), Milwaukee (WI), St. Cloud (MN), St. Louis (MO), Baltimore (MD), and Chicago (IL).
  • $447 in travel and "camping" supplies - Despite the kindness of my friends, I would rather be prepared for the worst. I am wholly intending to leave with the expectation that I may very well be homeless. This funding is to cover supplies in case that happens.
  • The remaining $1,383 is reserved for other travel necessities like toiletries, food, and any emergency costs that might come up.

If we surpass the goal of $5,000 then what isn't set aside to help provide more of an emergency buffer will likely go to offering financial incentives to my mother's family to make them more willing to take her.

Please donate anything if you can, and share the link if you can't.

Thank you.
