Help save my arms from this spinal disease

Hi, my name is Juan Andrés and I’m a 35-year-old from Ecuador. Just over a year ago, my life changed forever when I suffered a spinal cord injury in a motorcycle accident. Since then, I’ve been living in a wheelchair, trying to gather the broken pieces of myself from the floor and rebuild my life.

I live with a T7-level injury, battling not only paralysis, but also chronic, unbearable neuropathic pain that affects me every single day, even though this seems to be the fight life wants me to face.

Recently, I was diagnosed with a rare and dangerous condition called hydrosyringomyelia, a buildup of fluid inside the spinal cord that forms a cavity (syrinx). This cavity keeps growing, compressing my nerves, worsening the pain, and threatening what little neurological function I still have left.

After many medical evaluations, my doctors told me that surgery is the only option to stop this from progressing. The procedure involves removing part of a vertebra and inserting a catheter directly into my spinal cord to drain the fluid into my abdominal cavity. Ideally, they’ll access the syrinx from below my injury to avoid further damage, but if that’s not possible, they may have to operate above the injury, putting the healthy part of my spinal cord at serious risk.

It’s a complex and high-risk surgery, but without it, things will continue to get worse, and the pain may become completely unmanageable.

Unfortunately, the cost of live in this situation is far beyond what I or my family can afford.

This includes hospital fees, medications, and long-term recovery.

So I’m turning to you, friends, kind strangers, anyone reading this, because I still have hope, and I still want to fight.

Hola, mi nombre es Juan Andrés y tengo 35 años. Soy de Ecuador. Hace poco más de un año, mi vida cambió para siempre cuando sufrí una lesión medular en un accidente de motocicleta. Desde entonces, he estado viviendo en una silla de ruedas, tratando de recoger los pedazos rotos de mí mismo del suelo y reconstruir mi vida.

Vivo con una lesión a nivel T7, enfrentando no solo la parálisis, sino también un dolor neuropático crónico e insoportable que me afecta todos los días, aunque esta parece ser la lucha que la vida quiere que enfrente.

Recientemente, me diagnosticaron una condición rara y peligrosa llamada hidrosiringomielia, una acumulación de líquido dentro de la médula espinal que forma una cavidad (siringe). Esta cavidad sigue creciendo, comprimiendo mis nervios, empeorando el dolor y amenazando la poca función neurológica que aún conservo.

Tras muchas evaluaciones médicas, los doctores me dijeron que la cirugía es la única opción para detener el avance de esta condición. El procedimiento consiste en retirar parte de una vértebra e insertar un catéter directamente en mi médula espinal para drenar el líquido hacia la cavidad abdominal. Idealmente, intentarán acceder a la siringe desde debajo de mi lesión para evitar más daños, pero si no es posible, podrían tener que operar por encima de la lesión, lo que pondría en riesgo la parte sana de mi médula espinal.

Es una cirugía compleja y de alto riesgo, pero sin ella, mi condición seguirá empeorando y el dolor podría volverse completamente insoportable.

Lamentablemente, el costo de vivir en situación, está muy por encima de lo que yo o mi familia podemos pagar.

Esto incluye gastos hospitalarios, el catéter especializado, medicamentos y una recuperación prolongada.

Por eso recurro a ustedes —amigos, personas solidarias, desconocidos que lean esto— porque aún tengo esperanza, y todavía quiero luchar.
