Help Me Cross the Finish Line at Howard University

I never thought that my last year of college would be so uncertain as a senior at Howard University. I’ve worked so hard to get here because I’m from a single-parent home that has experienced continuous financial difficulties. I’m motivated by a strong desire to improve my family’s future.

My mother was unfortunately rejected for the Parent PLUS Loan this past academic year, leaving me with a sizable outstanding balance that I’ve struggled to pay down on my own. Every private loan I’ve applied for even with my mother or elder sisters as co-signers, has been denied. I’m at a standstill, with no other family members able to provide financial support. I’ve reached out multiple times to the College of Arts and Sciences and the Financial Aid Office, but I’ve either received no response or been told that there are no funds available.

To make matters more urgent, the Howard University Bursar’s Office recently notified me that my student account will be placed in collections if I do not resolve my balance by June 30, 2025. The pressure from this deadline is overwhelming, especially since I’m so close to completing my degree.

This financial obstacle has unfortunately pushed back my opportunity to graduate this summer, shifting my timeline to the fall or spring semester at the latest, depending on when I’m able to settle my balance and re-enroll. It’s devastating to be unable to register when I have only a few classes left to take. I’ve tried everything: applying for loans, seeking aid, searching for scholarships. Still, the door keeps closing. But I refuse to give up.

What keeps me going is the bigger picture breaking generational curses and creating generational wealth not only for myself, but for my entire family. This degree represents more than just a personal milestone, it’s a symbol of hope, perseverance, and transformation.
