Help Me Create a Space Where Textured Hair Belongs

Hey!

As some of you may know, I’m making a big life change in my 30s. I’m moving from Montreal to Toronto in October to go back to school for hairstyling.

And no...it’s not just a career pivot or a midlife crisis. It is a lot more significant than that.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Having curly hair myself, I’ve been through the woes of trying to make it look “acceptable” by western beauty standards. Basically frying the s*** out of it with a straightener, only for it to come undone the second there’s a bit of humidity in the air.

I remember feeling so ashamed of my frizz and my natural hair. I’ve had managers pull me aside and tell me I needed to “try harder” to look professional by putting more effort into my hair, because it looked “unruly.”

THE SHIFT

It wasn’t until I was in my mid-20s that I threw out my straightener (lost it) and started accepting what I looked like.

It was ROUGH to say the least, but after years of research, trial and error, and learning how to care for my hair, I finally figured out how to manage this mane.

That shift meant more than just hair, it was about accepting parts of myself I used to try to hide and felt ashamed of.

THE GOAL

I want to specialize in textured haircuts and styling and bring my knowledge back to serve communities that are often overlooked. I want to create a space where people with textured hair can understand their hair, feel seen, and confident in their crown.

Because those beauty standards were never built with us in mind.

THE PLAN

I searched high and low for the best schools to learn from. Unfortunately, most schools still don’t teach much about textured hair (hmm… I wonder why).

But I found a program in Toronto that does, Glassbox Education, and it’s exactly the kind of training I need to do this properly.

The challenge is that the tuition is $17,000 and:

  • I’m not eligible for traditional bank loans
  • Student loans don’t cover this program

So I’m relying on community support and my side hustles to make this dream a reality ❤️

All funding will go directly towards my tuition.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

If you’re able to donate, any amount truly means the world to me.

If donating isn’t possible right now, sharing this with others or sending along any resources or grant opportunities would also help so much.

For real, thank you for taking the time to read if you've gotten this far, and thank you for being part of my journey.

Love and thank you, to the moon and back ❤️❤️❤️
