My name is Jessica Ruiz. I am a mother, wife, and resident of Puerto Rico, and like many people, I struggle every day to stay strong for my family and my health. I live with a neuromuscular condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 3. This disease has progressively weakened my muscles, taking away my ability to walk. For this reason, I depend entirely on a motorized wheelchair to get around and perform my daily activities.

The medical appointments that allow me to continue my treatment and manage my condition are in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. However, I live in a coastal town called Isabela, in the northwest of the island, about an hour and a half away. Every trip is a huge physical and emotional challenge.

Our current vehicle is extremely worn out. On multiple occasions, it has broken down in the middle of the road, leaving us stranded, not knowing how to continue. For anyone, this is a stressful situation, but for me, due to my condition, it's a profoundly distressing experience.

Furthermore, I can't easily use a conventional car. Getting in and out of a regular car is extremely difficult and risky for me. Therefore, I urgently need an accessible minivan with a ramp, one that will allow me to enter safely and with dignity in my wheelchair, without endangering my health.

Every time I have a medical appointment, fear and anxiety accompany me throughout the entire journey. I travel the whole way entrusting myself to God, asking Him to place His protective hand upon us and allow us to reach our destination without incident. It shouldn't be this way, but today it's our reality.

The funds I'm requesting will be used exclusively to cover the cost of an accessible minivan, a specialized vehicle that, because it's customized, has a very high cost, beyond our current financial means. Unfortunately, I don't have the necessary income to purchase it on my own.

Además, no puedo usar un automóvil convencional con facilidad. Subirme y bajar de un auto regular me resulta extremadamente difícil y riesgoso. Por eso, necesito con urgencia una minivan accesible con rampa, que me permita entrar con mi silla de ruedas de forma segura, digna y sin poner en peligro mi salud.

Cada vez que tengo una cita médica, el miedo y la ansiedad me acompañan durante todo el trayecto. Voy el camino entero encomendándome a Dios, pidiéndole que ponga Su mano protectora y que nos permita llegar a nuestro destino sin contratiempos. No debería ser así, pero hoy es nuestra realidad.

Los fondos que solicito serán utilizados exclusivamente para costear una minivan accesible, un vehículo especializado que, por ser customizado, tiene un costo muy alto, fuera de nuestro alcance económico actual. Lamentablemente, no cuento con los ingresos necesarios para adquirirlo por mi cuenta.
