Dear friends,

My name is Mirela Dondea, and I’m reaching out to share my story. Since 2016, I have been battling Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a condition that has taken away my independence, my ability to care for my family, and the life I once knew. FND is an invisible illness that causes excruciating pain, seizures, spasms, and loss of basic functions like speaking, eating, and even breathing. On some days, I struggle just to sit or stand. On "good" days, I push through, but the fatigue and pain are ever-present.

But through it all, I keep fighting. I find strength in small victories, like cooking a meal or tidying my home. Despite the toll this illness takes, I refuse to give up. My love for life, my hope, and my will to keep moving forward remain unshaken. The generosity of kind-hearted people has made it possible for me to access treatments that I would never have been able to afford alone, giving me more good days than I thought possible.

A New Challenge: Invasive Breast Cancer

However, my journey is far from over. In addition to FND, I’ve recently been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. The road ahead is uncertain, and in a few days, I will undergo a breast amputation, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The physical, emotional, and financial toll of these treatments is overwhelming.

But even in the face of cancer, I remain determined. I will fight with the same resilience that has carried me through FND. Cancer may take parts of me, but it will not take my spirit or my capacity for hope.

I live on a disability pension, which barely covers our basic needs, and my husband cannot work because he is my primary caregiver.
