# My Journey Through Breast Cancer
## The Start of a Frightening Discovery
In the last week of March 2024, a seemingly ordinary moment turned into a life-changing discovery. As I stepped out of the shower and glanced at my reflection, I noticed something was amiss. My right nipple appeared deflated and flat against my breast. Alarmed, I examined it further, only to find a hard lump behind and below. A wave of fear washed over me as I considered the worst—a possible breast cancer diagnosis. Questions flooded my mind: Where did this come from? How had it appeared so suddenly? Was it like this yesterday?
Sharing my concerns with loved ones, it became evident that I needed to seek medical advice. But without health insurance and on a tight budget, my husband and I were unsure how to proceed. Eventually, we managed to pay out of pocket for a visit to a local doctor, albeit six weeks after the initial discovery due to uncertainty and financial constraints. I was experiencing a constant, dull pain, occasionally spiking and causing brief moments of intense discomfort. The doctor recommended an ultrasound and a biopsy, which confirmed my fears—it was breast cancer, specifically Ductal Carcinoma. Cancer had also spread to the lymph nodes in my right armpit.
## Grappling with the Diagnosis
The confirmation of cancer left me in shock and disbelief. I couldn't help but wonder if I had somehow caused this by my diet, lifestyle choices, etc. With no family history of breast cancer, it felt like an unlucky hand dealt by fate; however, as you know, we sometimes have no control. The burning question was, what was I going to do next? How would I fight this battle?
I decided to share the news with my close coworker and boss, who is also a dear friend. Due to financial limitations and partially due to my inability to believe it, months passed before I could take further action. I had a horrible time getting insurance I could afford, let alone being accepted. It took three long months to figure it all out. Upon approval, I realized I couldn’t afford it regardless. This is when a sweet friend offered to step in and pay for my health insurance to ensure I could begin treatment.
## The Road to Treatment
October 2024 marked the beginning of many medical examinations, leading me to the Corona City of Hope. On November 18, 2024, I began my first chemotherapy session. Determined to maintain a sense of normalcy, I continued to work, missing only the days required for chemo and other appointments. My boss was very supportive and was happy to help me out.
On April 4, 2025, I completed my last chemotherapy session. It has been an exhausting journey, but I made it through. The next step in my battle is surgery coming this Thursday, May 8, 2025. I will undergo a mastectomy with lymph node removal, and this is just the beginning of another battle.
## Seeking Support
As I prepare for surgery, I face the challenge of being unable to work throughout the summer due to post-surgery restrictions. I am reaching out for financial support to help cover medical expenses and daily living costs. Any contribution, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated as it aids me in navigating this difficult time.
## Support Received
I am so grateful to the many organizations that have helped me during my chemotherapy treatment. I look forward to being able to give back to all of these organizations when I can do so. Please thank Support Sisterz, Michelle's Place, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and My Learning Studio.
I am committed to sharing updates as I conquer each phase of this journey. As my sweet friends always say, “This too shall pass.” and with your support, I am hopeful for brighter days ahead.
