Help a Heroine of Hard Work Build Her Dream Retirement Home

My name is Maria, and for the first time in my life, I’m asking for help.

I’ve spent 48 years working—truly working—with my hands, my faith, and every ounce of strength God gave me. I started at 14 in a factory in Mexico to help my family survive. Later, I came to the United States with my family, without knowing the language, but with a dream: to learn the culture and better my self and my future family.

I learned English while going to high school and cleaning homes on weekends so I could help support my family. As a single mother, I raised two boys by myself, often working three jobs at once—cleaning houses, buildings, cooking in restaurant kitchens. I worked through every hardship, even through my pregnancies, until the day they rushed me from work straight to the hospital to give birth.

I never asked the government for help. I believed that if I kept my faith and worked hard, God will bless me with the necessary things even if it meant to work several jobs rather than ask the government for help as I always believed that others will need the help more than I was.

Now my sons are grown, and I’m still working. But this time, I’m trying to finish something for me—a small, simple home on a piece of land I bought with decades of sweat and sacrifice. For almost four years, I’ve been building it little by little, paycheck by paycheck. But it still needs electricity, drywall and flooring. I’ve poured everything I have into this dream, yet the rising cost of living keeps pushing it further out of reach.

What hurts the most is that I’ve been taken advantage of. People saw me—a woman alone, without construction knowledge—and they stole from me. Some took my money and left me with unfinished work . But they didn’t take my hope.

Today, I’m asking for kindness. Not for luxury. Not for anything extravagant. Just help finishing a safe, warm home where I can finally rest after a lifetime of carrying so much. A place where I can grow old in peace. I am still working as I can not afford to retired yet and every penny I can save I am putting in to my home.

If you’re able to donate, even a small amount will bring me closer to having a roof, running water, and a place to call home. If you can share my story, you’re giving it wings.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for reading my story and for any help you can offer. And, you are welcome in my place any time!

Sincerely,
Maria
