Greetings everyone! My name is Kara Angèle and I am an RD2Be! I am currently a clinical nutrition master's student at New York University and I have recently been accepted into a dietetic internship at UNC Greensboro in North Carolina for Fall 2022! Completing the dietetic internship and sitting for the credentialing exam are my final steps to becoming a registered dietitian with a master's in clinical nutrition. And Black dietitians only make up 2.6% of the dietetics workforce in the US! As a teenager and young adult, I struggled with food and body image. I have a passion for nutrition and I want to use it to help people heal and restore their relationships with food and their bodies, especially BIPOC people. I believe in health at every size and operate from an anti-diet, weight neutral framework. And I want to add to the voices already speaking on culturally affirming nutritional counseling and care. We must honor the traditions and foodways in our diverse populations. Nutrition shouldn't feel monolithic.
I will need $30,283 to support me during the internship. This will cover my internship tuition, fees, health insurance and other program costs.
Dietetic Internship Tuition: $25,000
Health insurance: $3,000(university insurance coverage)
Uniform: $150
Textbooks: $500
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Intern Membership: $58
Vaccinations/Physical Exam: $75
Professional Engagement Activities: $1,500
Total: $30,283
I am moving myself and my teenage son from Brooklyn to North Carolina to complete my dream. My dietetic internship will be 40+ hours a week, Monday through Friday for 9-10 months. And it is unpaid. Interns are discouraged from working. This is pretty typical for the fieldwork component of a registered dietitian's training. In addition to full-time fieldwork rotations, interns must do research, study and complete assignments and projects for the program.
Please assist me in funding my internship year! Student loan debt is debilitating for Black women in particular due to the racial and gender wage gap. No amount is too small. You can also help me by amplifying and sharing this campaign within your networks. Thank you so much for reading!
