Help Kabir Attend CSSSA Animation!

Hi! Most of you reading this are friends and family who know me. Thank you for taking the time to read my GoFundMe page and for helping me to raise $5,500 to pay for my tuition at CSSSA / Cal Arts this summer. It means a lot.

For those who don’t know me … My name is Kabir Kukathas. I’m a 15-year-old artist and aspiring animator from Seattle, Washington. I’ve been doing art ever since I can remember, and I started doing hand-drawn animation a few years ago. I’m bi-racial (Sri Lankan Tamil and White), and a lot of my art reflects my dual heritage and my love of elephants. Here are a few examples of my art.

This May I was accepted into The California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) at the California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts) to study animation. The four-week program begins on July 13, 2019.

Here’s a little bit about CSSSA from their website: “CSSSA is a rigorous, preprofessional, month-long training program in the visual and performing arts, creative writing, animation and film for talented artists of high school age… California residents enrolled in grades nine through twelve may apply to attend CSSSA. Students from outside of California may also apply; twenty are admitted each year. The admissions process is highly competitive. (Last session approximately one in three applicants in most departments were accepted). Students invited to the school are named California Arts Scholars.” (https://www.csssa.ca.gov/about/)

I'm extremely lucky to be able to go to CSSSA, especially because I’m one of only twenty students from outside of California to have been accepted this year. (Around 1600 students apply and 500 get in. Of those 500 students, 20 are from out of state.) However, because I’m not from California, I am not eligible for ANY financial aid. This means I (or more accurately, my mom and dad) have to pay the entire out-of-state tuition, which this year is $6,500. That’s in addition to the cost of traveling to and from California and some miscellaneous expenses.

That’s why I am asking for your help to raise $5,500. Any money you donate will be used to help pay my tuition. My parents will cover the rest of the tuition and our travel costs. Because I’m only 15, I’m not eligible to work in Washington State, but I will be raising money through yard sales and art commissions.

Again, thank you for taking the time to read this. As many of you know, it has been my dream to be an animator and to attend Cal Arts for college. I never thought it would be possible to go there as a high school student and study with professionals in the field. And also to hang out with other young artists who love animation as much as I do. I hope you can help me make that happen this summer.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
