Help me attend Tin House Summer Workshop

Donation protected
Hi friends and artist supporters,

My name is Preeti Vangani. I am an author and poet who moved from Mumbai to San Francisco to study writing. Having gotten my MFA in 2018, I've been lucky enough to secure a 3 year artist (O-1) visa in the US which allows me to keep working on my writing and perform my poetry in the company of my dear and talented writing community here. This is my first ever fundraiser for myself. I've been selected to attend the prestigious Tin House Summer Workshop in July 2020, a highly competitive workshop that will help me keep working on my second book of poems -- a collection of poems that dissect arranged marriage, family life and roles of a 'good daughter.'

As vulnerable as I feel in requesting your support, my desire to be a part of this cohort feels larger than my fears.

What is the Tin House Summer Workshop?
The Tin House Summer Workshop is a week long intensive of workshops, seminars, panels, and readings led by prominent contemporary writers. (https://tinhouse.com/workshop/summer-workshop/)

At the workshop, I would have the opportunity to have my work reviewed by the fantastic and esteemed poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil, and work on my craft in the company of other stunning writers from all over.

However, I've not been awarded a tuition scholarship and must pay a total of $2,000 to be part of the program. Due to COVID pressures, this month I've lost one of my two jobs. The non-profit I taught with, due to budget constraints, is suspending my role. I'd love if you could give the below poem a read, and consider funding my admission into the Workshop.

RELATIONSHIP STATUS
by Preeti Vangani

Humor has a thing for dark spaces

else how can you explain me kissing

my boyfriend hard as the flight blackened

for takeoff, the flight I was taking to go

see my sick mother. I’d find out on landing

that she passed away when my tongue

was busy sampling lust. I reach home and

gargle my mouth with all my lungs as if

guilt can be rinsed & emptied into a sink.

What else is space but a body of dark humor

craving physical affection like artificial life

support. How else can I explain why I over-

loved every boyfriend after her

with a fondness reserved only for mothers.

I realize this is a financially difficult time for everyone, but appreciate any little support to keep me going so I can be consistent in my pursuit to finish this book. To all donors, I am open to sending out a signed copy of my debut book, Mother Tongue Apologize, and happy to write in it any serious/sad/funny/wtf message or poem you'd like me to!

Thank you so so much!
