I was inspired by the work of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad to start my own advocacy plan, raising awareness and calling for legislative reform on human sex trafficking laws and policies in the Inland Empire, especially regarding the role hotels play as undetected hot spots for exploitation. While my advocacy plan has not yet been implemented, I am proactively researching and networking to gain as much information as possible to ensure I do so in a polite and legal manner. I was encouraged to apply to the Partners in Peace program by the co-director of my honors enrichment program. This advocacy gained recognition and helped me apply to the Partners in Peace program with NCHC—at first, just on a whim. I was shocked when I received an early acceptance email a week later, especially since the program only accepts 20 students nationwide.
This course is a rare chance to learn from Henrik Syse, a former member of Oslo’s Nobel Peace Prize committee. All 20 students will work on a collaborative project in our home communities, inspired by this year’s unannounced laureate. I truly believe this experience will give me the tools to make a real difference for the greater good. My passion is for people, and as an empath, I plan to pursue health care once I begin upper-division coursework. I have already earned an associate’s degree in general sciences and am currently working on my associate’s in biology for transfer to a UC—my dream is to attend Berkeley. For now, I just want to help at least one person not feel so alone in this world. Growing up, I was a strange child who didn’t have many friends, so if I can touch even one person’s spirit and help them feel less isolated, I would be fulfilled.
Unfortunately, I lost my job recently while pursuing higher education, and the expense of this course and trip is well out of my reach. The funds raised will cover the program cost, including the class, travel, meals, the trip to Oslo, and the cost of a passport. I am not seeking help for personal expenses—just for this unique educational experience. I am more than happy to provide proof of expenses. Any support would mean the world to me.
