Help Me Transition Into Marine Conservation and Biology
Donation protected
Hi everyone!
My name is Brittany and I am reaching out to ask for your support as I embark on an exciting new journey and the next chapter in my career.
For as long as I can remember, I have had a deep love for animals and science. I recall being a curious child, from carrying a dead squirrel into the house (much to my mother's dismay) to hunting for garden snakes, watching "The Crocodile Hunter," and coming across a Portuguese man o' war on the Gulf Coast. This passion has guided my professional life, leading me to work as an animal nurse, wildlife conservator, in ASPCA legislation, and as your local pet sitter. I have cared for countless furry friends and ensured their health and well-being, continuously feeling challenged and rewarded in this field. It never ends, and I love it!
Although I have thoroughly enjoyed supporting my community, I am thrilled to dive into the next steps toward my dream job: becoming a marine biologist. I will be completing my Open Water Diver certification in late August, the first of many steps. I am excited about the opportunity to work on the Marine Big 5 project in South Africa, an incredible chance to make a difference in marine species conservation both on land and at sea. This 4-6 week program focuses on ecotourism, research, and community development, and involves a variety of activities depending on the whale migration season and current conservation needs. More information linked at the bottom of the page.
The Marine Big 5 includes:
* Shark: The Great White, Bronze Whaler, Blue, and Mako. I might even spot Pyjama sharks while scuba diving in the kelp forests.
* Whale: Southern Right, Humpback, and Brydes’ Whales.
* Penguin: African Penguins.
* Seal: Cape Fur Seals.
* Dolphin: Bottlenose, Common, and Humpback Dolphins.
As a volunteer, I will be involved in:
* Assisting marine biologists in data collection and research.
* Supporting guests and providing operational support on whale watching and shark cage diving boats.
* Cleaning, fish preparation, and assisting at feeding times at the penguin rehabilitation facility.
* Assembling, cleaning, and monitoring fishing line bins.
* Collecting shark eggs and capturing data on various marine species.
* Participating in environmental education with local students and community educational shows.
* Conducting beach clean-ups and data capture.
* Attending lectures on shark biology, marine mammal species, rocky shore ecology, and more.
This program is the perfect opportunity for me to gain hands-on experience and contribute to marine conservation efforts. However, transitioning into this new role and participating in this program requires additional funding and lots of volunteering,
This is where I need your help. The funds raised through this campaign will go towards:
1. Program Fees: Covering the cost of enrolling in the Marine Big 5 project.
2. Travel and Accommodation: Expenses related to travel and staying near the project site.
3. Equipment and Supplies: Purchasing essential tools and materials needed for my role in the program.
Going through a career transition is tough, especially during a time of competitive job hunting. I went back to school in 2022 in hopes that my BS would help me secure different opportunities but it has been an on going battle with no's, potential yes's, long interviewing processes and even longer applications. I have continued with gig work in hopes of finding a remote job so it would be easier to pack up and go if the opportunity presented itself and in this moment, volunteering is a great step into passion, networking and getting quality experience. Time is flexible for me right now and I am also working to seize the moment. I would love to have a job where I could pick up and leave for 4-6 weeks, are you out there??
Your generous contributions will not only support my career transition but also help me make a positive impact on marine life and conservation efforts. I am passionate about protecting our oceans and their inhabitants, and with your help, I can turn this dream into a reality.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for considering a donation. Any amount, no matter how small, will make a significant difference.
Please share this campaign with your friends and family to help spread the word.
P.S. It's been a dream and at the top of my bucket list to swim with whales, but to work with them will be a whole other adventure.
With gratitude,
Brittany
Stay tuned for updates and to follow my journey :)
