Help Me Access Life-Changing Surgery for Chiari Malformation

My name is Alicia, and I’m humbly reaching out as I prepare for a crucial medical journey to the Institute for Chiari & Syringomyelia in Barcelona, Spain. I’ve battled a complex neurological condition known as Chiari malformation—a diagnosis that changed the course of my life before I even turned 30.

In April 2023, I underwent decompression brain surgery in the U.S. to relieve severe symptoms including mobility loss, dizziness, and intense neurological pain. While this operation offered temporary relief, my health has since deteriorated. In the fall of 2024, I was hospitalized for small fiber neuropathy—an incredibly painful condition that left me unable to walk. These setbacks have deeply affected my independence, energy, and quality of life.

After comprehensive evaluations and scan reviews with specialists in Barcelona, I was approved for surgery in November 2025. Their team identified early signs of ischemia edema, a fluid buildup in my spinal cord that may progress into syringomyelia—cyst formations that, if left untreated, could result in permanent loss of mobility. Fortunately, we’ve caught this early.

Unlike the more invasive decompression surgeries typically offered in the U.S.—which often require repeated interventions and don’t address the root cause—the Barcelona clinic offers the Filum System procedure. This minimally invasive technique targets the fatty filum terminale, which creates tension on the spinal cord and contributes to symptom progression. Alleviating this tension offers the chance for stabilization and recovery without exposing me to higher-risk treatments like skull re-openings or shunt placement.

The Filum System is not available in the U.S., which is why I’m traveling abroad for care. I am covering my travel expenses personally, but the surgery, lodging, and post-operative recovery costs present a significant financial challenge. I’m asking friends, family, and kind souls who believe in helping others reclaim their health—if you feel moved to do so, please consider contributing to my surgical fund.
I've attached the quoted price for the procedure - it is 19,800 euros which is a little over $22,600.

This procedure is my chance to rebuild the foundation of my life and avoid worsening neurological decline. I’m hopeful, I’m prepared, and I’m beyond grateful for any support you may offer.

With heartfelt thanks,
Alicia
