Hey everyone my name is Shelby and I’m 32 years old.
I never imagined I would be in a position where I needed to ask for help like this, but I’m hoping to regain some independence and quality of life.
I live with multiple chronic health conditions, including severe chronic fatigue, widespread chronic pain, and hypermobility. I also have suspected Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which contributes to my symptoms.
Although I can walk short distances, it is not sustainable and often leaves me extremely fatigued and in significant pain afterwards. Because of this, I have become largely housebound.
I miss simple things that many people take for granted, especially being able to get outside, enjoy fresh air, and spend time in nature. As the weather starts to get nicer, it’s been really hard watching life continue around me while I’m unable to take part. Even family outings have become difficult to join, which has been upsetting and isolating.
I recently had an assessment with NHS wheelchair services, but unfortunately I was not eligible for a powered wheelchair under their criteria. A manual wheelchair is not a suitable option for me due to pain and fatigue, and I do not have someone who can consistently push me without impacting their own health.
An electric wheelchair would allow me to safely and independently leave the house, access the community, and start rebuilding my independence. It would give me the freedom to get back outside, reconnect with nature, and feel part of life again.
The type of wheelchair I need is lightweight and suitable for my needs, and costs around £1,400–£1,500. There may also be additional costs for essential extras such as seating support or equipment to help transport it safely.
Due to my current health and financial situation, I am unable to afford this myself.
If you are able to donate or even just share this page, it would mean more than I can put into words. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings me closer to regaining my independence and quality of life.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story
