Help McGowan break the Irish Freediving Record
Dave McGowan, The second deepest Irish freediver in history needs your support.
It should come as no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted athletes the world-over. Practically every event from local level all the way up to the Olympics have been postponed or cancelled, and with that, training schedules suspended and training grounds closed, the hard-earned mental and physical conditioning athletes put in year-round in preparation for competitions have taken a hit. Despite this, tucked away in Dahab, a freediver's paradise in Egypt, McGowan is doing impossible things to progress the sport of freediving for Ireland. Diving to depths of a 20-storey building, for Dave to be competition-ready when the season starts, he needs Irish supporters to get behind him and help fund his next-level success.
Usually freedivers like Dave would be able to support themselves by teaching the sport of freediving to others, however the travel restrictions due to Covid-19 make it difficult for the majority of potential students to come for freedive training with Dave and other instructors alike.
The sport of freediving has been described as the most relaxing extreme sport on the planet, where the athletes hold their breath to either dive down into the deep blue sea as far as they can or to swim multiple lengths of a swimming pool, all while keeping relaxed to conserve as much oxygen as possible during these incredible feats.
Dave has been training hard during these last months and has reached a level where he is confident he can challenge some of the current Irish records. However there is a considerable cost involved with this, mainly training, equipment and competition fees.
