Maycie was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma at a very young age, which resulted in the loss of both of her eyes. Through faith, determination, and support from her family, friends, and community, she has overcome so much. We love her dearly and are asking for help as she faces another big hurdle.

Five years ago, Maycie started having severe pain in her temple and head and was dealing with chronic daily headaches. In April 2021, Maycie had surgery because the implant in her eye shifted out of place and was shoved up against the lateral wall, which was causing the pain and chronic headaches. The surgery was to replace her existing implant with a dermis fat graft. The surgery was a success, and the headaches subsided.

Several months ago the headaches returned. The ocular prosthetic (fake eye) in her left eye was not fitting well anymore and had caused some lesions. Biopsies came back negative (PRAISE GOD!), but the oncologist said the tissue in her eye was retracting and suggested surgery to try to fix it, as well as replacing both prosthetics since the structure of her eye had changed and they were an ill fit now. While Maycie was weighing whether to go forward with the surgery (the last surgery was so hard on her and the recovery was very painful and difficult), her left eye began to fuse shut, and she has not been able to wear a prosthetic in it anymore. She has decided to go ahead with the surgery in July, but the cost of the ocular prosthetics has gone up to $4,675 each... that's $9,350 total (we currently have $3,500)! The ocularist doesn't take insurance because insurance considers the prosthetics cosmetic. We are currently trying to get a letter of medical necessity from Maycie's team at MD Anderson to submit to the insurance. We've heard insurance sometimes reimburses around $1,000 afterward (not much, but it's something).

On top of dealing with all of these medical issues for herself, Maycie is also caring for her 9‑month‑old son, who was born with bilateral retinoblastoma and is undergoing treatment at MD Anderson. She had to quit her job when he was born since they have to travel back and forth to Houston for his treatments and appointments, and now her appointments, each month.
