**This story contains very graphic nature**
Many of you reading this might already know that Maya was involved in an altercation on the evening of January 10, 2019. As she moved through a tight spot in a crowded gas station Maya's car accidentally grazed the front driver's side fender of a car facing the opposite direction at an adjacent pump. Due to the limited space Maya rolled down her window to quickly tell the driver of the vehicle that she would pull around the back of the convenience store to a side parking area where it was less crowded. When Maya pulled up to the area the driver, a woman, was running towards her. Maya had not rolled up her window nor did she have any chance of exiting her car before she was assaulted by this woman who punched her repeatedly on the side of her head, ripped her clothes, and pulled on her steering wheel and still buckled seat belt. Frightened and unable to stop the assault, Maya reached for a pocket knife to show (not to use) hoping to get the woman to back off. Instead the woman grabbed Maya's hand with the knife and drew it across Maya's right eye slashing her skin and doing considerable damage to the eye itself. She also left a deep cut near the end of Maya's left pinky finger as it was held up for defense. While no one came to Maya's immediate rescue as she was being repeatedly hurt, there were a few mighty gas station employees who pulled Maya into the gas station and into safety, and witnesses who stuck around to testify. At some point the police appeared and arrested the woman charging her with aggravated assault, she bailed out that same night.
Maya was taken to Danbury Hospital and then transferred to Yale-New Haven for immediate surgery. The injuries that Maya suffered are serious and will require ongoing medical attention. Her eye suffered significant damage. The initial surgery was to sew it back together, because it had been sliced and was almost two pieces. It lost the jelly that fills the orb to keep it round and also provides a hammock to hold the lens. Since the assault Maya has been to New Haven several times, including the initial surgery and overnight stay. She has an upcoming surgery to remove the traumatic cataract that resulted from the slashing of her eye. That will allow a specialist to more clearly see the retina on the back of her eye. At this point from an ultrasound it looks like most of her retina is still attached, but there is one spot that could be a problem. The surgeon will have to, somehow, establish a way to insert a plastic lens due to the loss of eye jelly. He will also stitch her pupil to make it more round, although it will never again be completely so.
There is reason to hope that with this procedure and possible subsequent ones Maya will have some vision in her right eye with a corrective lens. The doctor said the next 3 - 6 months are critical depending on the retina staying in place. At this point it's unclear when she'll be able to resume her normal life.
Nobody likes getting into car related accidents no matter how minor. None of them, especially one that resulted in little (if any) damage to either car, should end in such a heinous assault.
For anyone who knows Maya, they can attest that she is a kind and caring person who truly wants to just share her love and make other people happy. She is a licensed massage therapist and works on shelving units as well. She will not be able to do such things in the meantime, thus no sort of income due to the process of waiting quite some time throughout this whole situation, Maya will need money for nessecties and living expenses. We are not sure at this moment how long it will be for her to drive again, or for her to be able to work again.
We ask with kindness and hope to please help through this traumatic experience!
Any Contribution helps! Whether it's $1, $5, $20...etc. And of course, if you cannot afford this, we only ask that you please share the link to the page and keep her in your thoughts! That way the message is spread hopefully as best as possible.
Thank you very much for all of your love, kindness and understanding in this truly unfortunate time.
