Help Maya to be an Overcomer!

Help Maya to be an Overcomer!

“You’re an overcomer. Stay in the fight ‘til the final round. You’re not going under, ‘cause God is holding you right now.”

As we received the news last week, I was instantly reminded of the popular song “Overcomer” by Mandisa. I knew that there would be a fight ahead but that God would be holding our sweet Maya through it all and that she would, and will, be an overcomer.

As many of you know, Friday the 21st, our joyful and loving Maya was diagnosed with cancer. It truly is a parent’s worst nightmare to even think those thoughts, let alone to hear the confirmed diagnosis that your child has cancer.

Maya received her diagnosis after having swollen tissue in her lower left eyelid which was thought to be a stye. After seeing several doctors in the matter of days, she was sent to Nationwide Children’s Hospital to undergo surgery and have a biopsy completed on the tissue.

Graciously, the Lord led her through the surgery beautifully and they removed the tissue completely. The tissue was not attached to her eye and so her eyesight was not affected.

By Friday, the biopsy was complete and we knew that she had a form of Rhabdomyosarcoma. Maya then went back to Nationwide earlier this week for further testing where the doctors diagnosed her with  Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS). This is a malignant soft tissue tumor that is formed from embryonic skeletal tissue and is the most common soft tissue sarcoma found in children.

Maya will be undergoing a 24 week course of chemotherapy as well as a course of radiation. For her chemotherapy she will go to Columbus and for her radiation, she will need to be in Cincinnati for the treatment.

The next 6 months will be far from easy on Maya and her parents, but we know that God is good and that He has a plan for this girl who lights up our world.

We have started this Go Fund Me account knowing that the cost will be great, not only physically for Maya and her parents, but also financially. According to Google, the average cost for cancer treatment in America is $150,000. If we can lift even a small part of that burden off of Derek and Lisa it would be worth it.

Any amount that you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
