Maya is a five-year-old golden retriever mix with the sweetest and funniest personality. If you were to cross her path on a walk, she would flop over on her back hoping for a belly rub. She loves to swim and could play fetch in the lake for hours. Since puppyhood, Maya was healthy, happy and full of energy.

But everything changed on July 25th, when Maya was diagnosed with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. Maya is currently in the ICU fighting for her life. The estimate I am given for treatment is $7000. I didn’t once question trying to save my best friends life, whatever the cost.
Any donation is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to click this link, read this far, and help Maya on her road to recovery❤️

Longer, detailed account of events:
Maya’s life took a turn for the worst on the night of July 25th, when I noticed a large black bruise on her groin.

I called the vet first thing in the morning. Bloodwork showed a critically low platelet count (25, with the normal range being 150-450). The question was why? Cancer was a possibility, but unlikely given her young age. The more likely diagnosis was immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, a condition in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys its own blood platelets. Without platelets, blood cannot clot effectively, leading to internal and/or external bleeding

Which is exactly what happened next. Despite being prescribed a high dose of prednisone, Maya began vomiting blood the night of July 28th. I rushed her to the emergency clinic and stayed up with her as she vomited blood throughout the night. She was started on IV dexamethasone, omeprazole, and cyclosporine. But any positive effect the drugs may have had was counteracted by her immune system continuing to kill the platelets. The vet came in around 3pm and said she may die, but estimated a 60% chance of survival if we bring her to the ICU for further treatment and 24-hour monitoring by a critical care specialist.
I rushed Maya to the ICU where she was connected back to her IV meds. As the day went on, the bleeding in her GI tract worsened and she began bleeding from her back-end. The vet warned she may need a blood transfusion if her RBC count dropped.
Which is exactly what happened on July 30th. Maya underwent a four-hour-long blood transfusion, which raised her RBC count by 5%.
It is anticipated Maya will be spending at least one week in the ICU, fighting for her life. The estimate I am given for treatment is $7000. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Thank you ❤️
