Introduction
Hello, compassionate friends and fellow animal lovers,
My name is Laura Amortegui, and I am reaching out to you all in a time of great need. Our beloved dog, Max, suffered a traumatic hit-and-run accident June 2023. Despite our best efforts and the initial coverage by our insurance, the expenses are piling up and we urgently need your support to continue Max’s medical recovery.
The Accident
On the early morning of June 19 2023, Max was struck by a car the cowardly fled the scene, leaving us to handle the aftermath alone. We were out of town when we got the call from my mother and teenage brother who were with him. They rushed Max to the emergency vet, where he started his journey to recovery. Max underwent many testing, imaging, sedations, and eventually the first of two surgeries. The initial 70% of these costs were covered by our insurance, but unfortunately the policy was maxed out, and we were left with 9 month of post surgical care care out of pocket. In those 9 months Max was getting better, mobility was coming back, his playfulness was returning and we underwent some special care to help him manage some residual trauma from the car accident.
Then Max’s health started to turn. The metal plates were rubbing his skin from the inside and causing his incision site to open up again, and he started to develop a mysterious skin condition. We wanted him to get the second surgery to remove the metal plates, but we had maxed out Max’s insurance and were already at around $15k in medical bills. With the support of our vets we created a plan to help us maintain Max’s life comfortable for a few months more until our insurance renewed on March 18 2024.

Second surgery and turn of events
On March 25 2024, Max went in for his second surgery to remove the metal that helped support and heal his bones. The surgery was a success but a few days later we started to see him regress in health. His body was covered in scabs, blood, and swelling. He couldn’t put weight on his paw and was not himself. We followed our surgeons advice and hospitalized him overnight to make him more comfortable and be able to have one of the 4 dermatologist in the area do a quick consult.
Over night our lives changed, his test results came back and he tested positive for an active MRSP infection on top of an autoimmune illness.

Current Situation
Max requires ongoing treatment, medication, and follow-up visits to ensure a full recovery. We have maxed out our insurance one week after it was renewed and the additional medical expenses have averaged $950 a month for vet visits and $300 additional a month in medications. Despite our best efforts we can not afford these costs without help.
Why we need your help
Your generosity can make a life-saving difference in Max’s life. We are humbly asking for any financial support you can provide us. Every dollar donated will go directly towards covering the medical bills that our insurance can no longer cover. Your support will that Max receives the care he needs to heal and return to silly, loving self.
How you can help
About Max
Max and Laura found each other when they both needed a loving soul. Max was in a home that did not have the time or resources to support him and was dropped off at Laura’s house at midnight one night as a last effort to provide him a better chance at life. Ever since then Max has been with Laura and now Andrew. Max has travelled cross country, peed in many states, hiked some national parks, chases chicken at his grandmas house and is genuinely curious about the world. Although not a service dog, Max was trained by a service dog trainer when he was young and has provided support to his family in their times of needs. He will always stop by with kisses and cuddles. Sitting on your lap and begging to play fetch.

Our Gratitude
We are profoundly grateful for any support you can provide during this challenging time. We promise to update you on Max’s progress and recovery. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and gratitude.
Warm regards,
Laura Amortegui, Andrew Poissant, and Max Amortegui-Poissant.
