Hi, I'm Chantelle and I'm raising funds for 2 really awesome kids!
One of my oldest and dearest friends Rachael has two kids, Max & Lilly, with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
Whats is Spinal Muscular Atrophy?
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic condition.
It affects the nerves called motor neurons.
SMA is the childhood version of motor neurone disease.
Although there is no cure for spinal muscular atrophy, there are new treatments available.
Unable to participate in sport with peers due to the progression of their disease, 8 months ago Max and Lilly played their first official game of wheelchair basketball... and in that 8 months Max's effort and progression has him selected to State level!! Lilly's disease hasn't yet progressed enough to be able to trial for State but she is in the State Performance Program and plays for Newcastle in the Waratah League. Their disease is only physical and their minds want to pursue being athletes in their sport.
Max's legs are worsening as the disease still progressing, on the court he pushes hard through his pain and is just an absolute champion! This kid is going to hit his dreams! Let's help him do that.
To make their dreams a reality there is a lot of hard work and training needed.
These kids train in every spare minute they have. Their closest training is Goulburn which is 4 hours away with comps between 4-15hours away.
They deal with a lots of travel and accomodation challenges to accommodate for our physical differences and 2x wheelchairs plus expense.
On top of all the training there is the treatment for SMA. 19 trips to Melbourne (3.5hrs away) just last year - for reviews, testing, leg braces and 4 monthly spinal injections.
These kids are selfless givers.
There is no cure for SMA and the treatments are not doing what was expected - keeping on with the treatment as there is no other option.
The visits for testing and review data are very likely to help research for future kids diagnosed with SMA.
Your donation will help these kids realise their dream and help with travel and accommodation for:
• Club comps throughout the year
• 2025 Warratah league playing for Newcastle
• Wheelchair basketball NSW State Performance Program
• Junior Nationals (first stop... Foot Locker National Junior wheelchair championships) - 15 hours away
Next?? More junior nationals selections and the the dream of JUNIOR AUSTRALIA TEAM!!
All money will be transferred directly to Max & Lilly to assist with the long list of expenses involved in their wheelchair basketball journey.
