My father
It’s so difficult to know where to start. If I were to sum my father up in a matter of words, I would say selfless, determined, devoted and proud…not to mention Elvis Presley’s number 1 fan. Put simply, Maurice is the best father a family could ever wish for. I grew up watching him dedicate every ounce of his spare time to helping others and expecting nothing in return. This has been evident in his everyday life and in his choice to work with numerous charities and causes (Chiang Mai Cricket Sixes, The Thai South African Chamber of Commerce, Automotive Focus Group and UNICEF to name but a few), raising millions over the past 20 years.
Still, to this day, Maurice would never ask anything of anyone, which is why myself and my three sisters - Caroline, Jennifer and Ethel, are reaching out to you on his behalf at this desperate time of need.
His upcoming battle
After a short illness, believed to be a common cold, my father was diagnosed with having stage 4 lung cancer on the 23rd of February 2019 which looks to have spread to his liver. He has a tube draining constant fluid build up in his lung to allow him to breath comfortably. This has all come as a massive and unexpected shock as he is otherwise a fit and healthy chap who is extremely young at heart.
With a job that sent Maurice to multiple countries during his career, Maurice has since retired and settled in the Philippines with my mother Renita and as such, is not entitled to any financial medical aid in any one country.
Treatment Options
Based on current findings, the doctors have given 3 options;
1) Do nothing - Life expectancy circa 6 months
2) Chemotherapy - There is a risk that he is too frail to tolerate this treatment. Life expectancy unknown
3) Oral medication - A fairly new but expensive drug that could offer many more years to cherish with his family and new granddaughter
We are all hoping that oral medication is a viable option as it the safest and potentially the most impactful treatment.
Financial Aid
Whilst it is early days and we are still learning what will be thrown his way, my sisters and I are unwilling to let any precious time slip through our fingers and know we will require funding to action immediate treatments and longer-term care through the Philippine health system.
All funds will go to Maurice's urgent medical expenses and will allow Maurice and Renita to focus on fighting the battle ahead of them.
My partner and I are expecting a baby in just a few days and I can’t bear the thought of him not getting to meet his granddaughter.
I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to read about my fathers’ journey. Updates will follow as we learn more in the coming days. A massive thank you in advance for any contribution you can make to help, we will be eternally grateful.
