Help Maui live the life he deserves

I had the pleasure of meeting Maui and his 3 siblings while his parents were away looking for a house to relocate to. The staff at The HOP and I instantly fell in love with him. Even though Maui is in constant pain he always had a smile on his face and was always looking out for his dog siblings. He brought joy to everyone that saw him. He is the sweetest most loving boy you could ever meet. Please share his story so that he can get the medical care he deserves.

Below is a Maui's story written by his Mom Christina.

Maui- born perfect but to the wrong family. Maui was 6 weeks old, just learning to play and be a happy-go-lucky puppy, when he was brutally attacked by an older dog that lived with him. The older dog went after Maui and ripped open his stomach and when the dogs’ owner went to separate the dogs, he pulled Maui away and in the commotion, slammed Maui into a cabinet with such force that his leg was broken in multiple spots. The owner brought him to a local vet to have him euthanized. Luckily the vet tech said that if he was willing to surrender Maui she knew a local rescue who would care for him.

In came my friend Carla. A dog angel.

X-rays revealed that his elbow was completely shattered and his leg was broken in multiple places. His belly was stitched up and looked like a zipper. 96 stitches!! Carla ran to get him and brought him home. He lived in a cast and in a cage for the next 6 weeks not able to walk for the fear he would re-injure his leg.

Carla posted his story on Facebook on her rescue page, which I follow, and when I read his story I knew he was meant for our family. I reached out to Carla when he was 10 weeks old. She said he was a mess and needed a TON of special care. But I knew that he needed love, he needed a family. My family. My family who would love him unconditionally. Snuggle on the couch, play with him and let him lick their faces and he would Never ever be hurt again.

Maui came to us at 12 weeks old. The kindest sweetest puppy we have ever met. Even with everything he has been through. His eyes are so kind and he loved us immediately. He was meant for us.

We took Maui to our veterinarian who referred us to an orthopedic specialist that took x rays and worked with his leg.

Maui’s elbow is still Shattered, and part of his leg still has multiple fractures. Maui needs an elbow replacement, which sadly they don’t do for dogs. We were given multiple options for the ultimate goal for Maui to be pain free. Unfortunately his bone in that leg is growing at slower rate which means some of the surgeries are not an option for him, one of which would be fusing his bones together. Maui already has arthritis in multiple spots, including his shoulder. We came to the hard decision to amputate his leg. It is the only option that will allow him to be pain free. Forever. But also, the only option that allows for 1 surgery that they can guarantee will give him the best quality of life. We love our boy and we are grateful everyday he chose us to be his family.
