Help Maui Family Recover From Historic Flood

Donation protected
This Is my Hanai Family here on Maui! On March 8th, we had the biggest flooding it seems anyone around Haiku has ever seen.

There was a community living in this beautiful place. The amount of their loss is yet to be calculated, but the main foot bridge that gets them  onto their property, the second foot bridge, and the ohana house…all completely swept away. All residents are safe...but they’ve lost everything. One evacuated just an hour or so before the house went. Among all residents on the property, they lost 5 cars.

The river rose incredibly high, turning part of the road at top of driveway into the river which overflowed from across the street. Cars could not pass for hours.

They had gone out to the parking lot to move cars and before they knew it the water rose such that they could not get back across the bridge. 5 of them and a dog walked quickly up the driveway before it turned into part of the river itself, water gushing down the steep driveway. They watched all the  cars as water came harder and faster, swirling about. Four people left, walking up the road, to Hanzawa’s area where some friends lived. The family received them so sweetly, so beautifully...warmth, dry clothing, food…

My hanai grandmother could not leave the main house, since the bridge was then gone! Later Sylvia, my hanai mother, climbed down the wooded hill behind the house from the neighbor’s property to the back of the house to be with her mother.

This morning after the rain gave a break, and after they had been out of water for a while, they realized that the water supply line was also gone.

They have no way to get to the house without that main bridge. My hanai grandma cannot climb the hill…87 years old. For now we’ll bring drinking water down that hill behind the house.

We are hoping to raise money to build at least the main bridge so they can have access to the house, and also restore the main water supply.

I know our community is amazing and we can do it together! Thanks all for you support!!!
