Let's Rally One Last Time for our Mayor, Mattice

Donation protected
Let’s rally to celebrate the life of one of Tacoma’s brightest lights.
You may have known her as Messy Mattice, the Unofficial Mayor of Tacoma or, more commonly, Mattice. Mattice passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 12 leaving a massive hole and ripple in her wake. She is survived by her husband, Chris, their family, and a community of close friends and acquaintances. This loss is palpable and felt by many.

We are asking for additional financial support so that Mattice's family has the time and space necessary to process this loss and get their affairs in order. Due to the unexpected nature of Mattice's passing, additional financial support will be used to:
  • Plan and host a celebration of life. Date and time TBD.
  • Support for outstanding expenses, including those for the store (below) as well as memorial services
  • Attending to her Store, rent and expenses while closed, and what comes next
  • Allowing her Family the time and space they need to take time off work and process this loss

About Mattice and our original GoFundMe
Mattice Hoyt was the proud owner of Mattice Beauty Supply — the only Black-, woman-, and veteran-owned beauty supply store in Tacoma, WA. She’s was a double amputee, a two-time cancer survivor, and a force of joy and generosity in our community.

In November 2019, after years of research and planning, Mattice took a leap of faith and opened her store during the height of the pandemic. She wasn’t eligible for many small business relief programs because her store hadn't officially opened when the lockdowns began... in fact, it opened 11 months late. Then, 3 months after opening, Mattice ended up in back in the hospital as a result of her cancer at which point she unexpectedly lost both of her legs.

So Mattice did what she had to do: she took out a $100,000 loan against her home to make her dream — and this gift to Tacoma — a reality.

Since then, she’s been paying back that loan every month — instead of paying herself a salary or hiring staff to ease the load. Today, nearly $95,000 remains.
