Let’s rally around one of Tacoma’s brightest lights.
You may know her as Messy Mattice, the Unofficial Mayor of Tacoma or, more commonly, Mattice. Mattice Hoyt is the proud owner of Mattice Beauty Supply — the only Black-, woman-, and veteran-owned beauty supply store in Tacoma. She’s a double amputee, a two-time cancer survivor, and a force of joy and generosity in our community.
In November 2019, after years of research and planning, Mattice took a leap of faith and opened her store during the height of the pandemic. She wasn’t eligible for many small business relief programs because her store hadn't officially opened when the lockdowns began... in fact, it opened 11 months late. Then, 3 months after opening, Mattice ended up in back in the hospital as a result of her cancer at which point she unexpectedly lost both of her legs.
So Mattice did what she had to do: she took out a $100,000 loan against her home to make her dream — and this gift to Tacoma — a reality.
Since then, she’s been paying back that loan every month — instead of paying herself a salary or hiring staff to ease the load. Today, nearly $95,000 remains.
Why We’re Raising $100,000
Paying off this loan would give Mattice the room she needs to rest, grow, and serve the community even more. Right now, any unexpected cost — whether it’s wheelchair maintenance, product tariffs, or theft — threatens her ability to keep going.
This campaign is about giving Mattice the freedom to finally breathe. She’s spent years pouring into Tacoma. Let’s give her a moment to refill her cup.
Mattice Does So Much More Than Run a Store
She shows up — over and over again — for her community.
- She attends and breaks down City Council meetings as Tacoma's Unofficial City Council Corespondent, so the public can understand what’s happening
- She donates free hair care kits to local kids in need
- She writes hilarious rhymes and raps that uplift local businesses
- She shares other people’s wins and spends her free time championing small businesses
- She’s often giving out of her own pocket, even when things are tight
Mattice is the kind of person who receives a grant — and turns around and gives half of it to others.
